browneyes_2die4 | What does your company pay for Maternity pay? |
My company offers maternity pay thru disability which is 65% but i was wondering if anyone's company out there does it differently. Additional Details I have a chance to negotiate the policy for maternity which will set precedence for future pregnanty woman here. This is a small startup company. Just wanted to see if there's anything I can model my request after. |

65% is the short term disability benefit everywhere. |

Huhhh, I didn't even get disability. I had to use sick pay and then no pay under FMLA. |

Disability coverage NEVER pays more than 70%. And I've never had an employer pay ANYTHING for maternity leave - they've never even offered me short term disability coverage with maternity benefits. |

Frankly, I've never heard of a company pay the maternity leave pay themselves rather than go through disability. (And I've worked for a huge national employee benefits consulting firm.)
Your employer might want to do some thorough research and review before deciding to self-fund maternity pay - one year with multiple pregnancies and their new policy could come back to bite them in the ***. See if there are any case studies of similar employers who have done the same thing. (I know that's what you're asking here, but I'd suggest looking through some professional journals, etc. too.)
The standard is 65-70%, but of course that's through short term disability.
(Note - if they decide to self-fund their maternity leave, make sure that they notify their disability insurance provider...perhaps they could get a reduction in that policy's rate in exchange for excluding maternity?) |

Nothing. We don't even have short term disability & I work for an insurance agency. I had to take my 12 weeks unpaid. I could have taken some sick time paid but I need to save that for when the kids get sick or there is an unexpected illness. I saved & saved & saved while I was pregnant & paid myself my paycheck while on leave. So, I funded my own maternity leave... |
