It depends what State you live in. Go to the government website for your State and look under "Business". There should be something about "Licensing" or "Professional Licensing." You would search for the Department of Insurance – every State has one. They regulate the eligibility requirements for agents, plus which insurance companies are allowed to do business in the State. Also, what kind of Insurance do you intend to be an agent for? There is Life Insurance, which is different from Property & Casualty Insurance. P&C is the kind of insurance you have for your home and car, also for businesses. Included in P&C is Liability Insurance, which is important. Additionally, there are other specialized fields in the insurance industry. You could try a search for a professional organization in your State, such as "professional insurance agent" and visit NAIW.org. Insurance is an interesting field with broad opportunities. Agents often go to work for companies and become underwriters. One of the elite positions with a company is as an actuary – you might check into what would be required for that position. Being an insurance agent would also open opportunities for your own business – small or large. You've got a good idea here and can go far with it. Best Wishes -- |

The state of GA requires 40 hours of class room study for each part of the test (Life/health & Property). Once you complete the class you take the state test. It can be expensive depending on how you go about it, but there is no other educational requirement to get started. You do have to complete continuing education classes each year to continue, however. |

First of all, you don't need college. (Yay!) There are a couple of ways to go about doing this. One being going through the state (rather costly). The other is to go through an insurance company, only a few offer this kind of help/education. You need a certain amout of class hours (16 in the state of New Hampshire). After you complete these hours, you'll recieve a certifercate and you bring that to the testing site. You'll have to take a test offered from the state, and if you pass you're an agent! You're allowed to take the test multiple times if need be. It's easier than you'd think. If you want I know of some ways to get this done cheaply, and easily. (I'm studying to get my license next week.) I'm working with a company that offers the classes (free), and they'll reimburse you for your testing costs. If you want more info e-mail me (MWebberSPFA@Consultant.com) I'd be happy to give you the information. :) |

Depending on the state in which you are in...In NC you need to go in an insurance school or take insurance courses online, pass the class test and then take the state exam and pass...you have to score 70 or higher on the state exam (that sounds easy, but it really isn't). If you want information on being an insurance agent in your state, I would recommend you contact your Insurance Commisssioner. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do... |

It depends on the state you live in, but I know all of the US requires you to take a course to get your licensing. It also depends on what line of insurance you are interested in. In NJ for a health/life licensing you must take 40 hour course and then pass the school exam with a 76% or better and then pass the state exam with a 70% or better then you will get your licensing.
You do NOT need a college degree to get your license, but I do know that you need your high school diploma to get it. |
