Hi. I am a European student and I currently live and study in the US. Few months ago I had to go the hospital for an emergency and got a terribly high bill. Since I am not familiar with the US medical system, I thought my insurance would cover for everything, but it doesn't (in EU emergencies are totally free). So now I really don't know how to pay.
What happens if I just leave the country and come back to Europe without paying?

Nothing. You're European so you don't have a US credit report. In the US credit is rated by different credit bureaus. I bad credit report or credit score in the US will have no effect on you in Europe because they don't use the US FICO ratings. While the US hospital technically could sue you for the debt, it would be very unlikely because it would be difficult to personally serve you with process. If you are classy, call the hospital's billing office and explain the situation and offer to pay what you can if they write off the rest. |

Then you can forget about ever coming back to the States. If you apply for a visa, you'll be flagged, because technically, you're comitting a crime. It's called Theft of Service. Do you work for free? Don't you want to get paid for the work you do? So do medical pratitioners. |
