What happens to a mattress when it is dried out after being soaked completely through?
Due to a major water leak from the apartment above my apatment was flooded with at least 1 " of standing water. My bed was soaked through to the box spring beneath it. What is the hazzard of keeping this mattress after it was dried out with a Stanley Steamer de humidifier, Will it still mold and fall apart or lose its support?
Yuck! We had some water damage after Hurricane Ivan that soaked our mattresses. Please throw it out. It will start to grow mold and just smell and be really nasty. It's not worth the health risk.

It may seem dry to you on the surface, but there could be moisture left internally. This may result in too many problems that develop later. Get rid of it.

This will take ages to dry out as the inners are quite thick.
Because of the moisture the springs will be attacked and rust and the chances it will start to smell of mold.
Throw it out as it will cause you a lot of problems.
Claim of the other peoples insurance, if there is no one in the flat then the landlord is the next likely target.

It gets light enough to get thrown in the garbage. The matress now has mold growing in it. You now have a reason to buy a new matress. Use your landllords insurance to get a new one. Threaten them with litigation. No insurance? Spend the money anyways. You will not be sorry you did so. If the landlord and tenant are jerks, call neighborhood resources and file an anonymous grievance and they will be forced to come out and inspect the property. This will put the fear of God in everyone.

It may well become a breeding ground for mold & mildew. Get rid oboth mattess & box spring. Check with your insurance company, maybe they can help pay for a replacement.

It will only mold if it wasn't dried thoroughly.
I would be surprised if the dehumidifier can REALLY dry the whole thing through. If I were you, and I was going to keep the mattress anyway, I'd put one of those air tight vinyl allergy bags around it.
It won't lose it's support regardless. But I would worry about mold.
