Vision plans are usually separate from medical ("health") plans. You can buy individual vision plans but you may find that they save you little if anything. Ultimately, it is your choice to wear contacts in lieu of glasses. |

You need VISION insurance, not health insurance. And I haven't seen any private plans that pay out more than they take in. Heck, even group plans severely limit coverage, to just the cost of the exam, plus copay, and $50 towards the contacts.
But private plans are going to make you pay in for a while before they'll pay out - waiting period style - which will keep you from buying the polciy, filing the claim, then cancelling the policy. |

You cannot insure yourself against a certainty. If you know you need contacts, then it is impossible to insure yourself against the possibility that you will need them.
To put it more simply, if you paid an insurance company, they would take some of the money and expect to need only some of it to pay for your contacts. So if your contacts cost, say, $250/year, you would have to pay your insurance company more than that so they could pay the $250/year for your contacts. So why would you want to do that?
You can only insure yourself against risk.
To put it another way, if everyone knew the precise day on which they would die, there would be no such thing as life insurance.
The only reason there exists "health insurance" that covers these kinds of things is because your employer can pay you in the form of health insurance and it's tax exempt. So these crazy plans that are called "health insurance" for tax purposes, but really aren't insurance at all, were cooked up.
The idea is that if your employer paid you $250 for your contacts, he'd have to pay $15 in payroll taxes, you'd have to pay $15 in medicare tax and $8 in income tax. So instead, he pays an insurance company $265 tax free. They pocket $15 and pay $250 for the contacts. You save $23 in taxes.
But you can't have that make sense with your own money. Nothing would balance out the $15 the insurance company takes for their "services". |

What you seem to want is a pre-paid medical plan.
When people expect their "insurance" to cover every aspirin, it stops being insurance.
This is one of the reasons health care costs are spiraling out of control. |

Most health insurance plans will cover a refraction exam every 24 months (check your policy), but not the "contact lenses fitting" expenses. Even with a seperate vision insurance policy, these plans do not usually offer coverage for contacts, just a discount at an approved provider. Your best bet is to get on-line and find the best price. |
