What if I upgrade my car insurance because someone threatens to mess up my car?
An old roommate stole a lot from me the day he moved out. I've been waiting 5 days for the police to take the report (they're busy according to them). In the mean time I contacted him telling him to return my stuff or I'll involve the police, and he said if I do that he's going to f*ck up my car.

Right now I have basic insurance but after he told me that I want to upgrade my insurance just in case.

My question is what happens if I upgrade and he does mess up my car?

If I file a police report about the threat can my car insurance deny the claim? What if the police are still too busy and he does this before I get to file a report?

What should I do? I already started parking 2 blocks from my apartment.

You can certainly upgrade your auto insurance but the increase in premium may be more than what you would pay to repair car if your former roommate does damage it.

Unfortunately, even when the police do take your statement it is unlikely that they will be able to obtain the goods your old roommate stole from you.

Also, for how long are you going to continue paying for the upgraded insurance premium? When will you know this psycho ex-roommate of yours has decided he doesn't want to destroy your car?

Your best bet is to put this behind you. You have lost some stuff but you have a bad roommate out of your life. Just make sure you change your locks - even if you think he doesn't have a key!

>Regarding Hector's comment that there is a "law" that you have to disclose a potential risk about a car when upgrading auto insurance there isn't any such law in the United States. There are not "pre-existing" conditions related to auto insurance as there are with medical insurance.

In my opinion, pursuing someone who is crazy might get you killed so why take the risks for a few hundred dollars of stuff?People get killed all the time by someone who they have a restraining order out against. The police and the court system cannot protect you when a crazy manic wants to harm you so if the crazy manic ex-roommate is gone - great - let him stay that way!

Get the insurance. Better insurance never hurts, the only thing is it's more expensive. Mention to the police (if possible) that he's threatening you. Threatening to damage property is just about as bad as vandalism... Hopefully the cops in your area "unbusy" themselves soon to help you out! But, getting the insurance would be worth it.

Change your insurance. Don't be so paranoid. Tell him that you don't give a crap anymore and he can just have what he stole. If he was an old roomate, change the locks. Also, keep an eye on your credit cards and other personal info, just in case, and if you got rid of a loser like that for the amount of stuff he stole from you, it is probably worth it.

The only reason you should upgrade your insurance is if you have liability only. If you have full coverage I wouldnt worry about it. And They cannot deny the claim if you file a report about it before it happends, as long as you have a suspect for the damage on your car, the police will investigate him and if they find him gulity your insurance will pay for your car and will press charges against him. So just make sure you call and report the claim to the cops before it actually happends and definatly DONT NOT call the police to report your stuff stolen from your home... that would be just stupid on your part... you want a paper trail on him every chance you get! Park your car in a place that he wouldnt think of in the mean time.... somewhere he wouldnt suspect, just to protect yourself in the mean time.

i would talk to your insurance agent and tell them the deal so if you upgrade and somethin happens they will have an easier time believing you

First of all do not allow anyone to intimidate you like this. Now as regards the insurance, the law states that if your car is under a known higher risk you must inform the insurance company you are insured with and with out getting the threat recorded or having proof the police won't do anything about it, but i'll come to them in a minute. If you tell your insurance company that your car is under a higher risk they more than likely will put your insurance through the roof. As for the police, contact them immediatley and demand that they come and see you immediatley. If they do not then contact a solicitor, especially if a threat has been made to you or your property they must deal with this immediatley. Not only are they dealing with a threat they are dealing with a theft and they should be with you straight away. If they still do not come immediatley do contact a solicitor. Do not and I repeat do not let them away with it, they would not let you away with doing wrong. Good luck mate I hope all works out.

Does upgrade mean, add coverage? As long as you add coverage before the incident, you should be covered.

But you WILL have to pay your deductible. If I were you, I'd file a restraining order against this clown.

They have to pay the claim. You can always say that you didn't upgrade for that reason. Plus, if you write a report on the threat, he'll have to pay the insurance company back anyways. And by the way, what the hell kind of police dept is too busy to do their job. That's insane... Go up there and demand to see an officer that can take your complaint.
