big daddy | What if you get a health insurance check for a hospital bill, do you have to pay the bill or keep the money? |
I get checks in my name to pay medical bills, I was wondering if I could keep the money? |

Sure you can, but the hospital is going to keep billing you. AND, eventually, they'll send it through collections and garnish your wages. |

You can keep the money but you will still owe the hospital for the bill, so you might as well pay it and not get in trouble later for a bill you can't pay. |

Can you legally keep the money? No.
Can you steal the money? Well, yes. But the hospital will be aware that you received the check, and they will take you to court for the money. You will also lose eligibility for any special financing programs the hospital has to help you pay your bills.
You might want to think through the implications of keeping the money also...let me tell you a true story that I encountered on the job recently...
Guy got insurance check for $1,000 and decided to keep the money. Had the guy turned over the check, he wouldn't have had to pay anything out of his own pocket. (The hospital would have given him a charity writeoff for the rest of the bill.) Since the guy defaulted on his agreement to turn over the check, he lost his right to the discount and got taken to court for the full balance of $15,000.
Talk about an expensive and stupid mistake on that guy's part! He's going to get his wages garnished until the $15,000 is paid off...all to try to get away with stealing $1,000. What an idiot.
But, you lose your right to charity programs and sympathy from the billing people when you try to steal money that doesn't belong to you! |

Of course you have to pay them the money. That is why the hospital billed it to them. In our small town some people kept the money they were sent for perscriptions instead of giving it to the provider and it caused all kinds of problems. |

LOL!
Yeah sure you can keep the money. Why don't you go rob a bank while your at it, Banks have a lot of money. |

you can keep the money (but this is unethical) You can keep the money and apply for free care @ the hospital (this is Fraud)
You can pay the bill (this is ethical but hard to do)
You can do what you want. The insurance company was dumb to send out that check. In this day and age it is too much of a temptation to just keep it. |
