needjob8 | What insurance companies in New York state offer individual health insurance.? |
I recently left my job and need some sort of health insurance. I'm single , no children. Neeed something with a high deductible to make it affordable. I have no pre existing conditions. I live in New York state and can't find anything less than $400 - $500 a month and that's the only company that offers anything.Suggestions? |

Your best bet is to see an insurance broker that handles health insurance. |

New York State has a bit of a reputation for expensive health insurance, I’m afraid. But depending on where you live, you may have some less expensive options.
First of all, if you aren’t already, I would suggest that you work through an agent rather than directly through an insurance company. You won’t get cheaper prices but if your agent represents multiple insurance companies in you state you can at least get a broader view of what’s available and make a more informed decision. It won’t cost you anything extra to work through an agent. So call an agent in your area to get started.
Or, if you want to take a look for yourself, you can also visit an online insurance agency like eHealthInsurance.com, where I work. You can get quotes, compare plans, and apply for coverage online. We have licensed agents you can talk to as well. The number is 1-800-977-8860.
Just to give you an idea of what might be available, I ran some quotes at eHealthInsurance.com for a 30-year-old male living in New York City and found several plans well under $400 a month. Of course, your rates may vary and insurers can change their rates any time, but if you’re willing to consider a plan with a higher deductible or one that only provides hospital coverage, then you might even find something in the $100 - $300 range. I found one plan, for example, that has a hospital-only plan that quotes at $137 a month for a 30-year-old in NYC. Plans like that won’t cover a regular office visit or prescription drugs (and Empire’s plans aren’t available state-wide), but it can still provide you with a layer of protection in case of a serious illness or injury. If that’s all you can afford and you’re willing to pay for physician services out of pocket, then it may be a good option for you.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

I would get quotes from several different companies and pick the lowest. When researching health insurance you might want to try and bookmark this site for research information, news, articles, insurance quotes, companies, links and more. It should have the resources to help you with your question.

Most insurance companies offer health insurance - but you're going to pay out the wazoo for it. Individual plans, according to my parents' insurance broker run about $700 a month, my friend's mother in law was paying $1000 a month - but that also can vary by county. Rockland county is higher in some plans than Orange county, but lower in others. That's because most insurance companies don't want to sell to an individual who could potentially default on the premium payments - they'd rather do business with an employer, the bigger, the better. You might want to look into Healthy New York - there's income requirements (I think you have to make less than $1200 a month - but don't quote me on that figure.) but you get the same exact plan as if you were paying privately, but the state subsizes some of the premiums. If you have a Maternal Infant Services Network office near you (they're listed in the white pages of your phone book), they should be able to walk you thru the application process. |

Yes, it is a difficult time now. I was shopping for the same thing in NJ and could not find anything cheaper than 1200. Thou I am not single and perhaps a little older than you are. Here what I’d advise you to do:
Step One: Obtain as many quotes as possible here:
http://www.healthinsurance.medgrip.com
Step Two: Check rating of Insurance Company which gives you good quote here:
http://www.ambest.com
Generally company rated AA and up is good company.
Good luck. |

New York thought it would be a good idea that no citizen of their state should be declined for health insurance. The result was that all the health insurance companies packed their bags and left town. Now, New Yorkers are faced with those ridiculous premiums so bravo for NY politicians.
So, that's why you're in that situation and that's just another example of how government acts and fails. To answer your question and point you in the right direction try Health.Net. I have a friend that has it and is happy. Also do a search for "new york health insurance broker" and see what you can find. Health.net isn't broker sold in New York so you'll have to compare that to what a broker can sell.
Good luck.

You should probably look at temporary health insurance. You can buy that from many different companies. Take a look at Blue Cross, Unicare. United Health, American National. You can quote a lot of companies at once by going to a site like http://www.lvhealthins.com or http://www.texashealthinsurancenow.com these are just a couple of the sites out there there are thousands. |
