That depends on a number of factors, including where you live and your current health. I suggest that you speak with an independent health insurance broker. A broker works with several health insurers and can help figure out the best plan, company, rates and coverage for you. To find a qualified health insurance broker, log on to a website like http://www.healthinsurancewiz.com and fill out a form requesting a free quote. Your information will be sent to a broker in your area who will contact you. There is no obligation, so give it a try! |

If you have a good understanding of the "ins and outs" of individual health insurance you can go on line to quote and compare plans and even apply on line. There are several sites that will allow you to do that. One of those sites is - https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ (there are other sites as well)
One thing to remember the the most affordable health insurance is a plan where you participate in the cost of your health care. What does that mean? It means the lowest cost will be for policies that have higher deductibles, higher copays, no prescription drug coverage and no coverage for a doctors office visit. If your young and healthy you may not need these coverages anyway and be able to pay for these items with the savings in your monthly premium.
But if you are unsure of what you need I would suggest contacting an independent agent that represents more than one company. He/she can help you customize a plan that balances your needs with your budget. |

None are affordable, and few are good. What the large print giveth, the small print taketh away. |

It depends upon who you are trying to insure and what kind of things you want to have covered. Insurance companies basically make their money by gambling that they have enough healthy people who don't use their services to pay for the cost of those who do, plus a little extra to cover their business and legal expenses, as well as to save for major disasters.
HMOs are probably among the most expensive plans available. They basically cover everything except for a "co-pay" -- a small amount you pay when you go to the doctor or use the pharmacy. Co-pays used to be as low as zero or five dollars, but now I think the norm is between 20 and 40 dollars. I believe the co-pays' primary purpose is more to discourage people from using the expensive services unnecessarily, than it is to collect money.
A better bargain might be a high deductible major medical plan. The premiums (your monthly bills for insurance) are about half of what they are for HMOs. The primary difference is that you "self-insure" the first $500 to $2500 (called a "deductible") of your medical costs (each year), and then your insurance will kick in to pay the rest if something really bad happens to you. This way, if you stay healthy, you can pocket the extra savings and put it into a savings account (including a tax-free medical savings plan) so that you will have it there for a medical emergency (and let it grow with interest). After doing the math, I found that even if I did have to pay the maximum deductible on my major medical insurance, the overall costs would be the same as one year of HMO premiums. So why not pocket the savings during the good years?
Also, major medical plans will provide you with discounts for using providers within their networks. To my amazement, the discounts can be pretty fantastic. For me, doctor office visits are about $60 on average (not too much higher than an HMO co-pay), and one bad year, I even had $2500 worth of outpatient surgery that was reduced to $1050. So I have never reached the deductible, but it still feels like the insurance has helped greatly. Perscription drugs vary in prices, but I've noticed that the plan's on-line pharmacy will automatically contact me if there is a generic alternative available. So I've been impressed with their proactive help in trying to save money for their customers.
Overall, the "affordability" of health insurance depends upon how you prioritize it. For me, it's always been the top priority, so that of course has always limited my purchasing power when it comes to chosing a place to live, a car to drive, a place to vacation, etc. But oddly, putting that expense first before all others also makes the "affordibility issue" seem less painful. |
