coolaz_7 | What is an insurance rider? |
|

Most insurance companies offer standard policy contracts they give out to all their insureds (or all those who are covered under the policies). Riders are amendments to the policy to make it more specific to the individual, usually having to deal with extra coverages you are paying for that aren't standard or required by the state. |

Melmo has nailed it for you. Another example might be that you own an expensive Steinway concert grand piano but your Home Owners Insurance policy covers only a small part of its value. You may have it appraised and insure it for its full value using a rider on your original policy for an added premium. You can do the same thing with expensive antiques or a large gun collection, etc. |

It is something that is added after the original policy is issued. |

Riders are additions. An additional inclusion, say some jewelry, would be a rider on your home policy. The rider would then give you the needed protection for the jewelry that is not part of your regular home policy. Oh, and they will cost you, but well worth it. |

A little something extra added (in most cases you pay for it to be added) to your regular insurance policy.
Example: You have car insurance. You want the rental car in case yours is broken coverage. You add it as a "rider" to your original policy and pay extra for it. |
