Life insurnace means different things to different people.
Life insurance is to allow you to acheive the goals that you want for after you die. It's there to allow you to make sure your kids get proper care and education. It's there to allow your spouse take time off work to grieve and make sure the family is taken care of. It's there to pay off debts so they aren't left to your family (in the case where you have a joint debt with a spouse, etc). It's there so you can make a charitable donation to help other live a better life. It's there to leave an inheritance to your kids or grandkids or whoever so they can live a better live than you possibly had. It's there as a tax shelter/tax defered saving program (depending where you live). It's there to cover final expenses like funerals. There are also various business reasons for a it, like succession planning or funding buy/sell agreements or making sure that if you die the family doesn't have to sell the family business/farm that has been in the family for decades.
There are ton's of reasons...if you are looking for a reason you need it, maybe give us some details on your personal situation.
Essentially, it's there to allow you to sleep a little better at night in knowning that if something happens to you, you're family will have the financial resources to live as normal a life as possible without you through a lump sum pay out of tax free money. |

Primarily, to protect your survivors by replacing your lost income. |

It is for creating money for your beneficiaries. Why? Because you may leave a family behind or a business partner that needs to go on despite you not being around.
Getting life insurance at a younger age sets lower rates for you cause the chances of you dieing young are minimal.

Life insurance provides different things to different people.
It depends on your goals for your life insurance.
Permanent life insurance builds Cash value and provides lifetime protection.
Term life insurance provides the most coverage at the lowest cost for a temporary period of time, usually 1-30 years.
Life insurance provides money to your beneficiary if you die while the policy is In Force.
Life insurance provides money to those who rely on you for financial support. Funds can be used for any reason, and are usually paid free from federal income tax.
Basically, life insurance can provide financial security for your family, replacing your income with life insurance proceeds that may be invested, and your family may be able to live off of the returns on their investments.

When you die you obviously won't be bringing in income for your family. Life Insurance can replace that income. If noone depends on your income then you likely don't need it, but if they do.... |

Life insurance is NOT savings. It's a CRAPPY savings tool, where you lose 90% of your money.
It's for paying out a large sum of money, if you die, for your survivors, to help them with YOUR loss of earnings, if you kick off. |
