Most companies today do not pay agents a salary. Most are strictly on a commission only basis. That means you can make as much or a little as you are willing to work to achieve. The average for most new commission sales agents in our area is around 30 to 40,000 per year. Some make a lot more, but some make a lot less.

The answer to your question is very broad. From what I know ( I work for an insurance company), right around $100,000 annually. You have to take into consideration all of the bills you have to stay open though. That subtracts about half of your earnings. I guess it depends on how knowledgable and hard working you are. Not to mention how impossible it is to do well in such a career if you live in a small town.

There is no limit, if you have no limit. Insurance is always sold and not bought. So, the income that you can earn depends on your persuasive skills. Agents are treated as pests in general circle.

I talked to the commissioner in Idaho and she said the average for Idaho was close to 12,000 yearly.

Salaries for insurance agents can vary widely within the US and will also depend on what type of work you do. Licensed agents can work in sales, service, claims, etc and also can deal with all types of insurance - personal p&c, commercial p&c, life, health, etc. If you work in a customer service position, commerical lines p&c will pay more than personal lines p&c, and you will have a higher salary in the metropolitan areas such as NY, Chicago, CA. I was a manager at a large independent NJ agency, and in order to hire experienced, quality customer service folks we had to be prepared to pay about $40,000/yr. Of course, having a desigation always sweetens the pot, as long as you also have experience and good references. I now live in the midwest and the salaries out here are much less...more in the neighborhood of $30,000/yr in the cities, less in rural areas. Here in the midwest, employers are more likely to categorize pay scales in hourly wages. Recently I was offered an underwriting position at a local MGA, (in a rural area) and the starting pay was $11/hr. I have 15 yrs experience in the insurance industry including management and training and I have completed 2 CPCU courses. In NJ I was making approx $62,000/yr.

The salary for an insurance agent isn't jack, unless you are really good at what you're doing and can make your boss a lot of money. Otherwise you're looking at about 10-11 an hour.

Best thing to do is call around and ask but act like you are just interested.
