Check the company that does your car insurance. Many companies will give you a multi-policy discount which could save you enough on your auto insurance to pay for the renter's policy. |

Most insurance companies offer rental insurance, such as State Farm, Allstate, etc.
Make sure that you get "replacement cost" coverage (what it costs today to replace your goods). Otherwise, in the event of a loss, you would receive depreciated value for your goods.
Also, you would have to add a rider to the policy if you have something of extensive value such as diamond jewerly, which would require an appraisal. |

There are hundreds of thousands of agents across the US so without knowing where you are no one can say for sure. Look for some local agents in your area in the phone book. |

What STATE are you in?
Start with the guy that writes your car insurance. If he can't do it, ask for a referral.
Or go to any local, independent agent. |

A good place to start is with the company that has your auto insurance. Ask them if they sell renters insurance. If they don't, you can always search online for a local agent. |

When shopping around, be sure to tell the agent that you and a roommate are co-renters together. Some companies will not do this, but some will.
You will need a best estimated guess of how much your stuff is worth as one total figure. Any high priced items like fine arts, antiques, or jewelry might need to be figured separately with appraisals.
Make sure you are dealing with a high rated company and ask the agent what the company rating is. If it is an A++, A+, or A, feel secure in knowing any future claims will be handled.
I would start out with whomever handles your auto insurance. A nice discount is usually applied if the same company carries both auto and home/renters. Make this your first call. |
