ANDREW H | What is your opinion for a gap ins. for your auto? |
|

Gap can be a good option for people who put no or little money down on a car, or who are upside down in their loan (owe more than the car is worth).
If your car is deemed a total loss or is stolen and not recovered, Gap pays the difference between what the insurance company pays (the value of the car at the time of the loss) and the balance of the loan.
So you have to look at the cost of the insurance versus the amount of coverage. How much value does your make and model car lose the moment you drive it off the lot? If it's alot, and you didn't put a lot of money down, Gap may be good for you.
Did you put a large chunk of money into your down payment? Gap is likely not going to be a good deal for you.
Do you not want to spend lots of time figuring all this out but know that you'll sleep better if you fork over the extra $10 - 20 a month?
It's up to you.
If you get it and sell or trade the car before the end of the term of coverage, make sure you cancel and get back any unearned premiums. Most people don't - and you are entitled to it!
Good luck!!! |

Andrew,
The cost for "gap" insurance is usually nominal in comparison to its value.
I would and do purchase gap insurance for the first two or three ownership years. At that point I re-evaluate costs versus benefit. The answer is generally contingent on the resale values. The higher the resale, the more likely I will continue "gap insurance" provided the premium is still nominal.
Good Luck. |

Get if it your vehicle is new. Once you buy a new vehicle and drive it off the lot, it diminishes in value immediately. If you were to wreck it, say on the way home, the insurance company wouldn't pay the new value of the car, they'd give you the blue book value for your car used. If you had a loan, you would owe the difference to the loan company. Buying the gap coverage would eliminate this problem. |

if you have a history of getting into accidents, and you didn't put alot down when you purchased your vehicle...its probobly worth it. if you made a substantial downpayment, and it's a short term loan...probobly not |

Good deal if you're belly up on the loan. |

It is especially important for a leased vehicle, where the lease rate does not reflect the residual value. If you have a new car lease, you should be sure to buy gap coverage. If you own the car, subject to a large loan, then gap insurance will pay off your loan in full should you total the car. Unless you have the cash on hand to do that yourself, gap coverage is a good idea. |

It is an absolute must. I have purchased it every time I got a new car. It usually costs about $300 from the bank. You never have to worry about owing money on the car b/c if something happens to it, the Gap insurance will pay off the car, no questions asked. |

Well, you flat out don't need it, unless you owe more money on your car than it's worth.
And me, well, I don't borrow money for depreciating assets (cars). I'd rather drive an old clunker.
But, if you insist on driving a car you can't afford, buy your gap insurance through your car insurance, not the dealer. |

GAP is the best!!!
It covers everything I will not get a car without it! So I am very accident prone. So my grandpa recommended it. But it doesn't just cover ACCIDENTS IT COVERS EVERYTHING IMAGINABLE!! So I bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was a student in school and I already had my Jeep paid off. Good thing. I didn't get Gap when I bought my car. I don't know why but I had it on my car before that one. Somehow I didn't get it. My grandparents were with me too and they owned there own insurance company for years. So somehow no GAP!! So this is what screwed me over. My dog who is a crazy puppy runs back and forth in the car. I was going like 80 on a back road in my small town. And my dog slammed my car into 2nd gear. (shoulda been fixed it was a recall from Jeep but it wasn't when I bought it so it was the person before I bought it's fault) So anyway he blew the engine in like 30 seconds or less my car came to a complete stop. Oil blew everywhere. My car shut off. It was suppose to save it but the thing that was suppose to save it didn't. I turned it back on and drove it into town. It blew everything the power locks radio everything in the car had to be redone because of the big jolt to the car that MY DOG DID! So my $14,000 car was now not working needed a lot of fixing and I sold it for $3,000 to a mechanic. If I were to have had Gap IT WOULD HAVE COVERED IT!!! I about died when I found out I had nothing. Car insurance only covers collision. Gap covers anything that happens to your car. I would have gotten a check for whatever my car was worth at the time before the accident which was about $13,000. I was so pissed!!!! SO GET GAP IT'S WORTH IT!!! And it's only like $100 bucks. You have to do it when you buy the car though that's the downfall. SO DO IT! You never know what's gonna happen. :) |
