What kind of insurance protects your things without owning a house?
I'm going to be moving out soon and it's going to be the first time I need to buy insurance.I'm going to be living in an apartment,so what kind of insurance should I get in order to protect my things in case of a fire or a flood or something?I don't want something to happen and me be left with nothing!I'm too young to recover from a financial loss like that!
I'm just not sure what insurance to get since it technically wouldn't be house insurance.I also don't want to be overpaying,so if you could give average costs or what you pay for your insurance, that would be really helpful!Thank you all!

You would need rental insurance.

car253
You need renters insurance. And, in California earthquake insurance can be helpful too.

Ask the insurance company that carries you car insurance first.

mbrcatz
It's commonly called renters insurance, but it doesn't cover flood. You'd have to buy flood insurance seperately - and flood insurance doesn't cover "stuff" that you keep below ground level, like a basement apartment.

The cheapest place to go, is your car insurance company. Most places in the USA, you can buy renters insurance for $150 a year, or less.

StephenWeinstein
The answer to your question is renter's insurance.

For other reasons, you also need car insurance (if you have a car) and health insurance (whether or not you have a car).

Renter's insurance. Cost depends on the amount of coverage and where you live.

cainvest1
Contact an insurance agent and ask about Renters Insurance. The policies usually exempt Flood insurance without additional premiums.

Depending upon the type of structure you will be living in and the amount of items you declare will factor into the premium amount. Most run about $150 a year.
