Aeros | What percentage of my insurance should I expect my employer to pay? |
I work for a small startup company and have no idea what I should expect my employer to pay for my medical/dental insurance. |
|

Depending on the size of the company-- they may not even provide medical/dental insurance. I would go in with the expectation of 0 - then you will not be disappointed.
Or, just ask your supervisor or HR department/person - what they pay.

Expect zero per cent. Than if they offer to pay more, grab it. Most start ups do not offer insurance.

The question is what do they offer? Employers cover anything from zero to 100%. |

There is no set amount. It depends on the employer. If it is a start up company I wouldn't expect anything to be paid for. |

~~There is no mandatory amount. It depends on the company's policy and which insurance company the sign with.~~ |

Industry standard is 50%, but it realy depends on the company and how else you are compensated. IF you are getting a less than average salary, ask them to cover more of the benefits to become competitive. If they are offering a higher salary, expect less benefits becuase you're already getting paid enough. |

It's so difficult in this day and age with the economy and all, but my boss, who has been a controller for almost 30 years (and changes jobs quite often) has said several times lately that in her experience, many companies pay 50% of employees premiums. I'm in Florida, if that makes a difference. |

There is NO standard. They could just offer the coverage and pay none or they could pay all of it. They could pay a percentage in between or a flat dollar amount.
The only thing you should do is NOT assume that it's the best deal available. Read my blog on my site entitiled "So your company offers you group benefits....SO WHAT?!"
It's the information you need to understand about group benefits. It's good for some, but not for everybody.

If your young, in good health and can afford it your better off obtaining private coverage anyway. You lock in your right for coverage by obtaining a guaranteed renewable policy and you won't lose your coverage if you have to change jobs. Please consult with a local health insurance agent for advise based on the area you live in and what state you are in. There are so many variables involved in health insurance coverage that you need to examine to make a good choice. There assistance will be invaluable to you. Good Luck |

An employer doesn't have to pay ANY towards your insurance. Most, however, will pay half of the employee's costs. As the average group plan costs about $400 per month per person, for an individual, that would leave your share at $200 per month. The average family plan costs $1200 a month. Employers usually pay somewhere from the same $200 a month in, to half the family plan costs, $600 per month. Or anywhere in between. |
