Chaaaaness!
What should I ask about RENTER'S INSURANCE?
Since I just got my first apartment, I am meeting with my agent today to talk about Renter's Insurance and I just need some ideas of what kind of questions I should ask so I know all the "details" and do not get ripped off.

What are good questions I could ask?

My co-worker told me to definitely ask if there are any deductibles I have to pay, so that is one of the good questions I will ask.

Please help me =) Im a newbie at this! Thank you in advance!

Funny thing.
When I got my first apartment I looked into this insurance.
My premium per year were more than the value of my possessions.
Getting insurance in a situation like that would be the dumbest financial move a person can make.

A renters policy is basically like a homeowners policy without the dwelling coverage. In this you have 2 main coverages, personal property and liability. Always ask about deductibles on any property policy.

Well, of course there are deductibles. What you need to make sure, though, is that:

1. you have replacement cost coverage
2. you have theft coverage - and you need to know if it's limited to "on premises only"
3. you might need OTHER endorsements, if you have jewelry, or business equipment.

You won't get ripped off, if you take the time to ask the agent to explain what is covered. Renters insurance is cheap, and highly standardized. And the best price, will probably be from the company that writes your car insurance - because you'll get a big fat discount on your car insurance when you buy renters.

To say that buying renters insurance is dumb is not smart.

What you need to ask are deductibles, replacement cost vs ACV (actual cash value) and maximum amount that you purchasing. The difference in replacement and ACV is that with replacement, you buy another item that is just like the item you lost. But with ACV, they can depreciate that item, meaning if you have a TV that is a year old and paid $500 for it, they may only pay you $400 for a new one, since it "depreciated in value" since it is 1 years old.

Granted even if you don't own a lot of possessions and think you don't need it, just look around your apartment and make a list of everything.
ie; bedroom; bed, clothing, furniture
living room; TV, DVD, stereo, furniture etc.

Now think if tomorrow there was a fire in this apartment and you lost everything, how much would it cost to replace? To start over buying everything from sheets, towels, dishes, silverware, TV etc, get the picture?

But another consideration of renters insurance is liability and that is the most important, since if say for instance and there was a question out here on Y/A that a tenant was accused for starting a fire by accident and the landlord went after them for payment for causing the fire. Or if someone gets hurt in your apartment, you need to protect yourself from being sued.

Most renters insurance is very cheap and I applaud you for thinking ahead on buying.

good luck
