Back in 2003 I bought a use car of the street on my way home someone exiting their drive way hit my back bumper. I agreed to pay $400. because I had no INS. having just bought the car. The other person got greedy and wanted more $. Bottom line I never paid, and there was no police report of the incident, but the other persons insurance company filed a DMV report a month after the accident, and that required me to show proof of insurance even though there was no proof i caused the accident. Now I need an SR-22 get my license back, but it does not specify a time period to have the SR-22. What should I do? |

You are required by law to have insurance and that is what the DMV is asking for--they are not asking for proof of who caused the accident. You look guilty because you did not file the report of the accident yourself with the DMV. In most states you are required to file an accident report. So, they have you on two things, not reporting and the lack of insurance. If you have a bill of sale on the car for the same day as the accident, the DMV might accept your story, but that doesn't get you off the hook. |

call your current insurance agent or company - the one that you currently have your auto insurance with- ask the company to "endorse" an sr22 filing onto your current policy . If you dont have an auto isnurance policy, call an agent , get one and tell the agent that you need an sr22 filing( it is basically just proof of insurance |

Go to DMV to get the proper numbers in order to aquire your SR-22 insurance which is around 100-200 dollars.Theres no getting around it so the sooner you handle it the better. |

If you had insurance on another car in 2003, and this was an additional car then your ins would have extended to the new purchase.. so I'm going to presume that you have checked that out and it's not the case.
Call your insurance agent and tell them you need an sr-22 filing to be endorsed to your policy. when it is no longer required, they will let you know. |

Well, the minimum time period for an SR22 is one year. So you can count on it being for at least a year. But you can call your state DMV and ask them how long you need to carry it, because it's LIKELY for 2-3 years. But it varies by state.
OH, and you can't fix most bumpers for $400. Bumpers usually run you $800 to $1200. |

If you just bought the car then your policy on your previous car will extend to cover any additional or replacement car for a certain amount of time. If the accident happened within that time frame then you were covered.
If you had no insurance on your previous vehicle.... well now you have first hand experience of the consequences of not complying with the financial responsibility laws.
You have to get liability insurance and the insurance company will file the SR22 with the DMV and you'll get back your driving privilege.
If you get pulled over or something happens now, then they can get you for driving on a suspended license. That's a major violation and then it starts to get real ugly. |
