Jonesy | What should he do (insurance question)? |
My husband has had a mole on his back for as long as he remembers. It has always had no color and been raised. About 3 years ago he accidentally cut it while scratching his back and it has grown, almost doubling in size.
He has a history of cancer on both sides of his family but has not gone to get it taken off an removed because we do not have medical insurance. He keeps saying that we will get it soon and that he doesn't want to test positive for anything and risk the chance of not getting coverage. I feel like this is a STUPID and RISKY idea but can see his concern about wanting to be covered at a later time, especially if he does have melanoma.
What should he do? |

He should get it looked at now. It's a preexisting condition, anyway, and even if gets insurance, they won't cover THIS. |

If he gets it taken care of now, it may not be cancerous. However, if he waits and it develops into cancer, he won't get coverage. His argument goes down the toilet. Pre-existing conditions may not be covered if he waits. Let's say now it's a mole. He get's skin caner later, he'll be covered. But if it's cancer now, any future skin cancer development may not be covered as it would be a pre-existing condition. It's a little complicated.
Depending upon his age, he may have to submit to a medical exam. If he gets it removed, it won't show up during the exam.
You don't have medical insurance now but he doesn't want to risk not getting coverage. Huh? |

Get it looked at. Most medical insurances have pre-existing conditions clauses and whether or not it's officially diagnosed doesn't matter, especially when it comes to cancer.
In most cases in a critical illness policy, for example, any cancer claim within the first 6-9 months (depending on the company) is automatically declined as a pre-existing condition. Cancer isn't somethign that just appears over night into a full blown life threatening state.
Get it checked out. It won't be covered by any insurance anyways. |

As stated earlier this is ALREADY a preexisting condition. So he may as well get it looked at now. Most people believe that something is not a preexisting condition unless it's been DIAGNOSED. Wrong, wrong wrong!!!! A preexisting condition is typically defined as any condition for which the proposed insured has sought advice, consultation, or treatment. Or any condition or symptoms for which a prudent person would have sought such advice, consultation, or treatment.
Clearly your husband had a condition for which a prudent person should have sought advice etc. |
