I’m not disagreeing with previous answers that in the past and maybe even at the moment having a good degree was more important than what it is in.
However this situation is changing, and as time goes on having a relevant degree will become more important especially as more and more people coming into the job market have business related degrees. When I started work in Insurance 25 years ago, you just turned up, got a job and if you were good you moved up. These days they want you to have a degree before they let you make the tea.
20 years ago no-one did ‘accountancy’ as a degree (not unless they were terminally sad), but now it’s becoming more and more popular. Given the choice of three graduates, one with ‘accountancy’, one with ‘business law’ and one with ‘Ancient history’ which ones do you think have the advantage?
The other thing is, qualifications don’t stop when you leave school. To ‘move up’ you’ll be expected to get some professional qualifications under your belt and this is where the choice of degree can really matter because you’ll get exemptions from parts of the professional exams with a ‘business type’ degree that you won’t get with history. So even if choosing history doesn’t make any difference when you start, you could find yourself up to 2 years behind your peers who have business degrees when studying for a professional qualification.
Tom’s answer is a good one, you can never go far wrong in business with accounting or law and they have the bonus of being very transportable to other industries. Wendy also makes a good point about Risk Management but it is a bit more specific and hence less transferable, I’d be inclined to do something more general and then study for something like the IRM diploma as a postgraduate deal.
Oh and if by Travel, you mean really travel… i.e. internationally … the above applies even more as Insurance is a lot more sophisticated outside the US and a post graduate professional qualification is almost vital. |

If you really want to go far and you're sure you want to work in insurance t hen the best degree to have is one in business with an emphasis in risk management (not too many universities have a major in risk management, but check with yours). Take every insurance course you can, and communication courses in things like persuasion and nonverbal communication help, too.
It's true that you don't have to have specific degree for insurance (mine is in Communication), but if you're serious about a career then some insurance and business coursework can only help your success, especially as the most successful agents usually have their own business and need to understand how to do so. |

I somewhat agree with the previous post, however if you are just going to get a degree to get some letters behind your name, why not get something that will have an actual purpose in your chosen profession. I would suggest a Business Administration degree majoring in finance or something.
Many inurance companies don't care if you have a degree if you're just looking at sales, you just need to pass the insruance exam.
I would suggest meeting with the company you are looking at and ask them if they have any recommendations on what courses you should take. And then meet with a few of the advisors in the industry in your area and ask them for some advise. |

Most employers want to simply see a 4 yr degree, from a reputable university on your resume. |

I would focus my education on understanding estate tax laws. (i.e. accounting or law) because the huge life cases go to agent that understands how to advise people who have achieved significant wealth use life insurance and annuities to transfer wealth and avoid taxation. |

It flat out doesn't matter, so pick a major in something you love.
My major (and degree) is in Speech Therapy. All the insurance companies care about, is that you have a degree. |
