LOVER | What should my Mom do when doctor refused to check her due to lack of insurance? |
My mom has not been feeling well for awhile now. And she gets chest pain most of the time. She called her doctor for an appointment, but they said they can't accept her because she doesn't have insurance. (They used to when she had insurance).
We brought my mom to the emergency room. The doctor in the emergency room called my mom's doctor and doctor said to just call him Mon/Tues.to set up appointment.
My mom went there today and receptionist there denied my mom. The doctor hid in his room. He wouldn't even come out. The receptionist had a sour face at my mom telling her to go away.
What should we do?

Your family dr does not have to see you. They are not under the same rules as the ER.
So, if your mother can make payment at the time of the visit (most dr's accept credit cards) then she should let the receptionist know. If the dr still will not see her -- she can go to the local urgent care. They will see her but payment is due at the time services are rendered. |

I'd suggest calling around to find a new doctor...one who will negotiate a cash price with her for the office visit. (note - they may require that payment up front) Or find a local clinic in your area that treats uninsured patients...they may have a sliding fee scale based on the patient's income. You could also try an urgent care center.
Is your mom low-income? She should inquire to see whether she is eligible for Medicaid in your state.
How long has it been since your mom's last visit with this doctor? If it has been a long time, some doctors will still consider you a "new patient." (My husband is generally healthy, so he went 3 years without seeing his doctor. When I finally called to make an appointment for him, we had to go through all the new patient waiting and paperwork again.)
Technically the doctor isn't required to take her on as a patient, especially if they haven't treated her in a very long time...though they should have at least tried to negotiate a cash payment with her, if your mom had advised them that she was willing to pay out of her pocket at the time of the visit. |

Go to another Doctor (or another E.R.) & get your Mother the help she needs. She should THEN file a Complaint with the Hospital that the Dr. works at. THEN she should write a nasty letter to your Local Newspaper, and (naming names) tell THEM all about what happened. And finally, -you should all VOTE in November. Because until the Politicians are TOLD to fix the lack of Health Insurance Situation in this Country, what happened to your Mother- is only going to happen- over, & Over, & OVER again !!! :( |

Ha that's American health care for you. Sorry about your mum but bottom line she'll have to get insurance. Glad I live in the UK where health is more important than money. Yes the NHS has it's faults but the principle of free health care for all at the point of entry is very important. Sorry you live in the states and I hope your mum's okay. |

Go in to the doctor, and offer to pay cash for the appointment, up front, before the appointment. $200 should do it.
No one is required to provide your mother with free medical care. Offering to pay cash, up front, before the appointment, will make the doctor believe you're not going to stiff him. |

Try a low income program in your state. Or, try a local community clinic that is free or for low income. You can try United Way.
Do you think your mom's chest pain is due to stress, anxiety or panic attacks? I know your probly not a doctor. But it helps to know. Maybe you can do some reading about these things. They also cause chest pains and it feels like your having a heart attack, but your not. I am not a doctor either, but I am familiar with these symptoms. But your mom needs to see a doctor to rule everything else out first.
