I think you mean HMO? As in Health Maintenance Organization...
An HMO is a way of organizing health care providers. There are also PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations) and POS(Point of Service providers.) Actually, there are others, but those are the most common.
An HMO usually saves you money in terms of premiums and that's because you are (almost always) only covered if you visit providers that participate in the HMO. If it's a great network locally, that's probably no big deal (because you would be covered for emergencies if you were travelling outside your network area.) However, if the list of providers is slim to none in your area, it's a losing proposition.
It's difficult to answer what plans might be good because the plans available vary by location. However, Assurant Health offers plans in most states. You can check out the link below if you'd like a quote: http://ldb.mymedicalquotes.com |

A HMO is a type of insurance policy that works with a specific network.
You have a basic primary care physician (PCP) who maintains all of your health care. This doctor is sort of like a gatekeeper to all your health needs. When you feel you have a health related issue, you see your PCP to determine where you should go and they will write a referral to a doctor, in the network, who willl be able to help you.
A lot of HMO's do not have 'out of network' benefits, so it's important to make sure there are plenty of doctors in your area who participate with that specific health plan.
If you live in a bigger city/metro area, an HMO is a good policy.
If you live in a more rural area, you may want to check out a PPO policy. |
