What sort of damage could someone do with your name & social security #, anything?

Additional Details
If they buy things, get loans, etc. won't the police (or whomever) nail them with the address they gave?

They can do all kinds of damage to your credit, reputation, bank accounts, etc.

Dont do anything to the X ! It's not worth the jail time.

Also, anyone curious, identity insurance is really cheap. I pay $65 a year, they cover all the expenses anyone made, plus time spent on straighting it out.

Someone can do lots of damage with that kind of information. Such damage includes:
1) Opening credit card accounts (most common and easy to do)
2) Access your bank account (done by professional hackers)
3) Take out a large loan and run.
4) Steal your personal information

Basically, your entire identity can be stolen in a matter of days or weeks. So, people should be careful on who they should give their SSN to.

Go and take out loans all over the place and not pay them.

Take a job using your info and then not file taxes for it.

Basically, they can screw your life up for years to come if they are inclined to break the law.

Why do you ask?

ahh don't put yourself in jail for him. You will very likely go to jail.
The reason, cause it never fails.

Open credit accounts in your name, put you in a major amount of debt

They can basically take your identity

What you mentioned is a felony, and no guy is worth jail time.

HOWEVER - the best revenge - see about getting his pay garnished. Since you have his SSN, go to the courts and see about getting his pay garnished to pay back the debts he owes you. Hit him where it hurts!

They can steal your identity and you may not know for years! They can buy homes, cars, take out loans, open credit cards and steal all the money out of your bank account. They can mess up your credit pretty bad in a short amount of time.
To prevent this DO NOT carry you social security card on you. Leave it at home in a safe place. When you go to a bank or somewhere that your number is asked (ssn or account) write it down in front of them and hand it to them. When they are done with it take it back and you keep it, when you get home shred it or rip it up. Also buy a shredder for your bank statements, credit card statements-- anything that has an account number, and/ or your social.

A lot of damage like stealing your identity, opening credit card accounts in your name, taking out car and mortgage loans, applying for jobs as well as not making any payments to anybody and effectively ruining your credit and your life.

They can commit identy theft. I'm not sure how deeply it goes. I know they can get your work history, the amount you are paid, your birthday, age, phone number, and sex. You can get someone's credit history. They can know what type car you drive, the tag number (going through the right law enforcement steps). They can mess up your getting social security in the end by assuming your identy and having you declared dead; I went to my local social security office when I applied for Medicare Disability in 2000. I SWEAR TO YOU, someone had played a joke on me and the social security board had me listed as "deceased." I would have gone for years, had I not become medically disabled, working only to find no money for my time at the end; I had enough quarters paid in after Medicare got everything straightened out...it would have and could have been a real mess though.

Ah, if you want to get him back, be prepared to do jail time. That's called Identity Theft, using their name & SS number to take out credit cards and charge them up. And once someone starts trying to track you down (which the credit card company will do, once the bills start going unpaid), it's not too hard to track you down. Then you get arrested and go to jail.

How about just getting on with your life, and getting over him? And don't lend money (which, btw, means "joint credit" or "signing for someone", which is how YOU get left with debt) to someone you're not married to.
