What sort of health insurance can a grad student qualify for whose past age 29?

Additional Details
i should also mention that the student is not yet working, finishing up school so income is really low-medical costs as far as labs also an issue so for lab work, is there a temporary social assistance program to help out?

The temporary social assistance is called Medicaid.

The grad student part is irrelevant. If you want coverage with very low deductibles, for the 30 - 35 crowd, it's GOING to cost about $250 - $300 a month. If you want to cut the monthly premium down to $150 a month, you're looking at taking a $2500 deductible, or higher.

And the graduate school probably offers a major medical plan, also, but with hefty copays and deductibles. But it's going to be the cheapest thing out there.

Your school might offer insurance. It is usually it a pretty reasonable cost. If not, depending on what state you are in, you can check into a state sponsored low income insurance.

Each state has its own various plans available, through the insurance companies that are licensed in each state. The particular state may in fact have some type of plan for lower income people that is subsidized. I would suggest that you, or the student get hold of the insurance commisioner's office of the state of residence for some assistance in this.

Usually, student of any age can get insurance through the university they attend. Many times you can extend this coverage for six months or so after graduation. There's probably info about it on the university's website.

Good luck.

Individual plans can be pricey. Many part-time or temporary positions now offer group health insurance.

For immediate care, check the local phone book for a community health clinic-these offer health care to low income residents.

When I was in grad school, the university required us to have either their health insurance program or another one that they deemed satisfactory. It was pretty comprehensive. Are you sure that the school does not already have one in place?
It only cost us about 600 dollars a year (this was three years ago)

When my daughter went to college in another state, I purchased an Aetna personal health insurance plan for her. The reason we did that is because our health insurance is an hmo plan that is not portable out of state. Even though it was more expensive than the coverage offered at her college ( it costs about $150.00 per month) it is better coverage, plus she can keep it after she graduates, until she finds a job with coverage. So far, it's turned out to be a very good policy. Why not get a quote from Aetna and see if they provide coverage in your state? Good luck, and stay healthy!
