I assume that you are asking how much insurance you should carry to insure that they are cared for and receive a good education if you were to die young. There are calculators available on the internet that can walk you thru the process or you can talk to an insurance agent. It used to be that insurance was meant to cover final expenses such as hospital bills, funeral expenses, etc. Now they factor in things like lost income and college costs. You are smart to think about this early. The younger and more healthy you are when you start life insurance the lower your premium. There are different kinds of life insurance. Term insurance has a much lower cost, but the premiums will increase on some schedule as you get older. Permanent insurance will cost you a lot more, but the premium is guaranteed not to increase and may build cash value as well. If you are carrying a mortgage, it you will probably want to consider getting both term and permanent insurance. The term insurance is carried until your mortgage is paid off. When calculating how much insurance you need don't factor in life insurance that you may have at your job. You may change jobs at some point and your new employer may not offer it.
