What will happen to my grandmother (insurance question)?
my grandmother has been in the hospital for about a month with renal failure, she has a pacemaker also. Legally she is still employed. The hospital is trying to put her in a nursing home...she has to have dialysis every other day and her insurance policy says that they can't pay for her transport back and forth to the hospital,we haven't the money. what can we do?
Additional Details
thanks for helping.....she is a large woman and cannot walk, also her social worker said that it was the family's problem not hers.

That is a tough one. Maybe someone has to drive her back and forth.

You can try and appeal a claim to the insurance company saying that the driving is medically necessary. You may need to get the MD or hospital to cite and sign this. Also see if she qualifies for disability.

Good luck, sounds tough.

Health insurance generally does not pay for non-emergency transportation. (such as back and forth to hospitals, doctor appointments, etc.)

If your grandmother were able to receive Medicaid, it might cover transportation. Medicaid in my state does, anyhow...you'll have to check the regulations in your state.

Or else the family members will have to take turns giving her rides to her medical appointments. That's how most families have to do it. My mother and her sisters shared "transportation to doctor" duty for my grandfather for the last several years before he passed away.

MOM KNOWS EVERYTHING
Look into medical assistance through the state.

At some point, you will have to sign an IOU to the dialysis or the nursing home to continue care. It could cost $7,000 a month. This is one of the things that older people have to talk to their families about. Would Grandma want you to go into debt to keep her alive for another year. Did you ever ask her. Does she have an inheritance that could pay you back when she is gone. Then you could sign an IOU.

Im sorry to hear this. Im pretty sure your grandmother would qualify for medicaid or medicare. You should look into applying for that.

She will have to start liquidating all her assets to pay for her transport back and forth. Once she is broke, she can apply for Medicaid, and then let the taxpayer pay to transport her back and forth.

Are you saying the transport from the Nursing home to the hospital? When she gets in the nursing home you need to talk to the Social Worker who is working her case and see if she/he can arrange transportation.

Is she eligible for medicare/medicaid that will take over her expenses after a certain number of days?
