College is not nessassary to get into the industry, however, having some kind of business or financial background or knowledge will go a LONG way! For the most part, you just have to write an insurance exam to get your foot in the door. There are different exams for different areas in the insurance industry, so it depends on which direction you want to do (home/auto, life and health insurance, accident/sickness/travel, etc). Contact your local insurance council or contact a company you want to work for and they'll get you rollin'

Keep in mind, typically insurance agents are self employed, so you may not have a steady paycheque all the time or benefits anymore. Every company is different, but a lot of the time they talk about all the great things and not prepare you for the downsides.

You have to take a course with a school to get your license. In Caifornia it is only 52 hours. Then you have to take a state test. Then you can get appointed with a company.

Some companies do require college and some do not. Personally I feel college should not be a requirement, just hard work. But I do not make the rules.

Each state has different requirements for obtaining a license to sell insurance. You will have to complete some pre-licensing training courses and then pass the state test to get the license.
College is not necessary in most cases, although some companies may specifically require that.
When it comes to developing a career as an insurance agent, that's probably the more difficult part. I am an independent insurance agent, which means I don't just sell one brand of insurance, I sell many brands. Personally I think this is a better way to go. You might check with the independent insurance agencies in your local area to see if there are any entry-level openings.
Good luck. It can be a GREAT career.

most states have licensing exams. i have no idea if insurance companies have any educational requirements. most agents are not company employees. they work for themselves on commission. they just happen to have a company shingle.
