What would you do if a friend/relative made a false claim?
What would you do if you knew (or had strong suspicions) that one of your friends or relatives was making a false or staged insurance claim? Would you report it to their insurer, or would you be frightened in case the friend/relative suspected it was you who reported them, and therefore consider it not worth risking your relationship/friendship over? I know this sounds like a weird question, but I work in insurance and am curious about what people think.

I would probably make an annonymous call to the insurance company. It is because of these sorts of false claims that everyones premiums are so high. Even the ones that aren't paid cost the insurance company a fortune to fight.

First, I don't associate with theives and that's what that person would be. If I DID happen to know someone who would do that, I would report them.

OK, there is a HUGE difference between KNOWLEDGE and STRONG SUSPICION.

If it's STRONG SUSPICION, I would NOT do anything. If it's KNOWLEDGE, then I would report it to your state insurance department's fraud unit - NOT a carrier.

ME
if you are a licensed insurance agent and you know someone is committing fraud, you could get in serious trouble for not reporting them.

I agree. Knowing and having a strong suspicion may feel the same, but the law looks at them completely differently.

If I had first hand knowledge of the fraud, I would report it to the Department of Insurance Fraud unit. One can do this anonymously.

Despite other folks' opinion to the contrary, it isn't like insurance agencies are just sitting on money and trying to hold it back. I've heard stories like that a hundred times, but it always goes back to the fact that they didn't have the coverage they thought they had. Now it may be true that their agent didn't explain something, but the policy language is really clear.

I have a rather large policyholder who registers his car in another state to avoid my state's high car registration fees. He's told me flat out that's why he does it. He drives on my roads, he has the benefit of the public safety officers, but he doesn't want to pay for it. I turned him in anonymously on the website. The guy has more money than God, but he wants to save $500 a year on registration. Sorry, I'm not going for it.

This is a question of ethics - and being in insurance I'm sure you understand this. If you are afraid the friend might suspect you, send anonymous letter to the insurance company stating what you suspect. Then it can't come back with your name on it for the friend to have proof. Also, if you are struggling with this issue, then it's clear that you know what you should do, you are just afraid of what the consequences might be.
As an agent, we have continuing education and ethics classes yearly. False claims are one of the main reasons, if not the main reason, that insurance is so expensive.

Tell them they need to stop the claim, or they can get in BIG trouble for fraud.

This is a tough question...I would probably mention it to them that what they are doing is wrong and filing a false claim is illegal. It is the insurance companies job to investigate on their own. I am not hired by the insurance as a secret investigator.

I mean ...I had been faithful with our insurance company over the years and when it came time to file claim for items that was destroyed in a lighting storm. The insurance company decided to replace with cheap items and send T.V out to be repaired instead of replaced like the T.V. repairman suggested they do. Our T.V. lasted less than one month after the repair and we had to purchase a new T.V. out of our own pocket. Meanwhile our insurance agent lives in a million dollar home.

Insurance companies watch out for there own pockets and those that have been with them and has had a proven clean record of no claims for years can also get robbed.

Depends on the closeness of the family member or the friend. I mean even though I would completely disagree with it, i wouldnt rat out my mother. But it's also a little weird to tell on someone especially if it has nothing to do with you. Sounds a little selfish but remember: Don't ask. Don't tell. I would also look at the person differently and their character would be forever tainted in my eyes. As for pickin up the phone and telling on them...NAH!!!

Explain what insurance fraud means. Maybe the penalties will scare them straight.

YES.

it depends on the friend i guess

I'd let my friend/relative know I thought it was dishonest, but I wouldn't call the insurer. Nothing personal, but insurance is such a scam. You pay and pay and when you make a claim the company finds any reason not to pay you. I have no pity for insurnace companies.

The best thing to do is do nothing sometimes, do not tell on your friend; but warn your friend not to do that but be careful; for if your friend does something like that; you can't tell what is going through your friends mind. But best thing to do is stay out of it if your gut - feeling tells you to stay out, and if not be cautious; but I recommend that you stay out of it because; there are a few true stories about another friend helping one with insurance fraud; and you could get yourself into trouble; the law will think otherwise and think because of your knowledge of insurance, you might be behind it; make sure you have evidence, to protect yourself, because you could get blamed for a crime you did not commit, do not let that a crime fall on you, stay away, because I know people who have been falsely accused of a crime they did not commit. Do not let it escalate too far, if it does make a call, but call from a city away; and call anonymous, from a far distance. Use tricks if possible, but also find out if someone is trying to set-up your friend make sure that all is true and that you are very sure, don't jump to call the police unless you are sure but play regular, acting regular will help you to gather information over time, then when you are sure, call the police. Do the right thing, sometimes people we love! become change on us, and we are the only ones that can stop them, we must stop them, that way they do not end up getting into worse problems, some thieves start to kill when they get too desperate, be sure to no your friend more. "I wish you the best. "
