These days, mainly the spelling.
Strictly speaking insurance is a contract against something that might happen - such as accident insurance or fire insurance. You are insured against in happening.
If you insure your life, you know you are going to die some time so you are assured of it happening.
In the early nineteenth century, insurance was popular but you could only insure your life one year at a time. Then Equitable Life came up with the idea of a permanent policy where the premiums didn't change and it paid out eventually whenever you died. They called their contract life assurance and the name stuck for all types of life policy. |

Insurance is a policy you take out in case something happens, car accident, house damage, luggage lost on holiday.
Assurance is for something that will happen, basically death. It's a policy to either help dependents left behind or to pay for your funeral. |

You insure something that may happen ie home & contents insurance, car insurance you assure something which is inevitable i.e. it will happen; life assurance.
Once you know this it all becomes clear.
It is something that i'd say 70% of people still don't know. |

They're the same thing. It has nothing to do with whether it's a definite payout or not. For instance, AFLAC stands for American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus, yet they sell policies that may or may not pay out. Even whole life insurance, the only type of policy on earth that is guaranteed to pay out, only pays out half the time, due to insureds not telling their beneficiaries about the policy, and early cancellations. |
