Whats the point of a million dollar insurance policy?
I don't get why people get it. It just causes more prblms. They say, "honey I got a million dollar insurance policy" and then the spouse can't wait so they end up dead.

LOL.. sorry..that is fairly funny! There is plenty of reasons to have that large of an insurance policy. Some have many children, or a lot of debt, so if something should happen to them, they need their family to be taken care of.

Do people get killed for insurance money?...sure...but I don't think it is as common as you think. :)

You watch too much tv. It is very rare that murders take place for the insurance policy.

The point of it is what happens if you the primary bread earner dies?
By accident or by natural causes.

Any responsible person wants to have their family taken care of in case of such things happening

It's compensation and protection for your family.

Let's say you get a million dollar policy. You and your family live fairly well, you have a nice house, live in a pretty nice neighborhood, you have a mortgage, car payments, kids, your living the American dream basically. Let's say within the few years you get this policy, your involved in a car accident and you pass away. Now, your wife is a stay at home mom who cares for your two children. She has no job. You've saved money sure, but not NEARLY enough to pay for the things required. This million dollar policy will help cover things you guys payed for, but because your income is now non-existent, normally wouldn't have been without it. It will help prevent house forclosure for your family, keep your utilities running, and help pay for your cars. All it does is help cover the absence your partner has in case of an untimely demise.

You over-estimate the value of $1 million.

If you invest $1 million and earn 5% interest (and where's that right now?), it's only worth $50,000/yr., taxable.

The real financial risk at death is the income lost to survivors. If you won $1 million in a lottery you'd be rich because you're still able to work. If you were offered $1 million to never work another day in your life, you're not even upper middle class, especially after inflation eats away that $50,000/yr.

If your spouse couldn't wait for you to be dead with $1 million in life insurance, maybe it's not just for the money? :-)

If you have a lot of property, many children, lots of money, or a lot of debt, then you might consider a million dollar policy. The idea is to protect those you care about if something happens to you, and there is no one else that brings home the bacon.

Like any insurance, you need to decide if you have a NEED for it.

If I, for example, had a child a year, and had 10 kids under 10, I would likely need to have a million dollar policy so my husband could hire a housekeeper and several nannies, until the kids were grown and out of the house, if I kicked off tomorrow.

I don't have that many kids, though, and they ARE growing up, so the ACTUAL insurance need for our family is quite a bit less - we've decided on $250,000. Plus, we buy term, and invest the difference - by the time our term policy is "over", we will be able to "self insure" off our investments.
