When/How Do I get Life Insurance Proceeds?
My father died, my stepmother (apparently) sent death certificates and I don't know what else to the life insurance company in December.

I am a beneficiary to the life insurance policy. I do not know which company the plan is with and have had no contact with them.

Is this company going to send my check directly to my stepmother? Contact me for proof of my identity?

How long should this take?

I feel uncomfortable being so completely out of the loop on this - it just seems like I should have received some sort of notice from the insurance company.

Edited to add: I must say that some of your responses are so offensive. I loved my father deeply. He was everything to me. I cared for my father around the clock for weeks and am still recovering from the toll that took on me. He was very wealthy. I am to receive a very minimal amount for reasons I don't need to go into. Yes I am sure that I am the beneficiary. I wouldn't have asked the question if I was not. No I am not selfishly grabbing at money. The money is not what I am concerned about. my concern was family dynamics about *who* had sent in the application and how I would know what was going on. Your responses make me wish I'd never asked.

You need to contact the life insurance company and have them send you the claims papers. You usually just have to fill out a short form and submit a death certificate. After that if the policy was more than 2 years old you should get a check in a few weeks. If it was less than 2 years old the insurance company can contest the claim and make sure everything on the application was legit. The claims investigation can sometimes take months while the insurance company investigates and gets medical records.

good luck

What you need to know now is that you WERE listed as a beneficiary not just told. If your step-mom has the policy; ask to see it or at least tell you what company it was from and then call them later asking for an update on the situation. I don't know anything about your family but one thing to consider is; was your stepmother around when the policy was made in the first place or was she changed to a beneficiary after the policy was made. The reason why this is important is the same reason that I mentioned earlier. Are you listed on the policy as a beneficiary or was she just told or assumed to be. Some policies have the children covered but only up until a certain age. At which point, you may not receive anything.

Get the Policy Number and call the Company. To make sure everything is understood correctly, have your step-mom with you when you make the call unless it would cause unnecessary hassle. I hope that this was of some help to you.

If you are in fact a primary beneficiary and of age (18), the insurance company will pay the benefit directly to you. Many people who think they are beneficiaries are not. Also, if the insurance company doesn't have your current address, that could also be a source of the delay. The insurance company has only the information that your father provided to them.

Companies do not give money to no one who is a not a beneficiary. If your mom got the money, she was it. The only reason she got it if she wasn't, was if she filed a affidavit that the beneficiary could not be located. If your just trying to get money what a sad thing. I work in this business and i see people go crazy over free money. Say you where a beneficiary, you could have been second. That just means that you would has received it if the 1st beneficiary was not around for whatever reason. Or unless if was suppose to be split. Best bet is talk to your mom or the mortuary or family. Sounds strange to me on your part

If the insurance company does not have your address they may sent the check directly to your step mother.

I would try to ask your step mother in a polite way which company the life insurance is with. You want to make sure you get your money if you are a beneficiary. There is no way of knowing what company it is without asking.

Good Luck.

The insurance company should have contacted you; however, since you don't know what your stepmom sent to them, there's no telling what address or phone number they have for you. The insurance company can not send the check to anyone but the bene by law. Ask your stepmother who holds the life insurance contract so that you may contact the company. That's not an unreasonable request.

Sorry to hear about your dad. It's unfortunate that people don't sit down and have certain conversations before death. You should have been provided with a copy of the policy for your own protection. I work in the industry and there are a small percentage of claims that go completely unpaid for years because the insurance company can't find the bene, or the family had NO idea the person had a policy and they didn't let the insurance company know the person died, so the insurance company isn't even in the loop. It's crazy.
