horse8dreamer | When a business goes under, like an automaker, do retirees lose their benefits too? |
I think if a person has worked for a company for so many years, then their retirement should be secure. I put a lot of money into mine each year and I feel that I am entitiled to that money. |

Deferred compensation plans are different from 401K. Retirees that are not in a separate account can absolutley lose retirements. |

Yes, when the business goes under, so do the pension plans and group health insurance.
But you are not putting your money into the company - you're putting it into a 401K, which stays with you, forever.
That's not the situation with the automakers - their retirees have PENSIONS - that's not money they set aside, it's a promise of future payment for not working. THAT'S what goes away. Your 401K is as safe as your investments. |

pensions are guaranteed by the PBGC upto about $60,000/year. If your company goes under, they will make your pension payments to you. |

401k plans are always separate from the company you work for - the assets are held by the Investment company overseeing the plan and if old-time pension plans are fully funded, they should be protected also |

No, all is not lost.
The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) is a federal corporation created by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. It currently protects the pensions of nearly 44 million American workers and retirees in more than 29,000 private single-employer and multiemployer defined benefit pension plans. PBGC receives no funds from general tax revenues. Operations are financed by insurance premiums set by Congress and paid by sponsors of defined benefit plans, investment income, assets from pension plans trusteed by PBGC, and recoveries from the companies formerly responsible for the plans. |
