If you ask an agent... We'll tell you everyone needs life insurance!
To me it's more a question on how much life insurance you need and the type you need.
If you have no family, no dependents, no mortgage, no debts at all, then I'd say just a burial policy with a face amount of $10,000. to $20,000. would do just fine.
If you have a home and a mortgage you should cover the entire mortgage balance and think about disability insurance too.
If you have a family and dependants you should probably cover your annual income and multiply it by 10. Example if someone is making $20,000 per year they should have $200,000 coverage.
Any other debts you have i.e. car loan, credit cards... anything. should be added to this amount too.
Then you have to pick a type of insurance. To make it simple there is Term and Permanent (whole life). Term is a good choice if the amount of insurance is high, say to cover a mortgage. Term will get expensive when the term runs out or it will expire.
Whole life builds cash value, premiums are fixed, and you have coverage forever as long as you pay your premium. The draw back is they are usually more expensive when you first take them out. |

When you are making financial decisions that affect another person.
Even if your spouse works, if there are children, consider insurance. Also consider a policy even if there aren't children if you buy an expensive home together as it can be hard to support that house on one salary.
If you have a business with a partner, you should probably have insurance to buy your interest out of the partnership rather than leaving it to someone else. |

You need life insurance when someone depends on your income.
Although there are multiple types of coverage out there (term, cash value, permanent), they are all just term products. Some have bells and whistles.
Term insurance is pure insurance.
Cash Value insurance (may end after a term, may not) is Term insurance with a savings plan. You can borrow the cash value with a few caveats. If you don't pay it back before death, they take it from the death benefit plus interest and fees. If you surrender the policy, there may be tax issues to deal with.
Permanent insurance is designed to last till your dead or age 100. I have heard of a few policies going to age 125 though. This may have a cash value element to it even though it is priced about the same.
Cash value and Permanent insurance are also usually designed to collapse upon themselves at around age 65-70. Not all do though.
All and all, talk with a financial person close to you to figure out how much you need and for how long. Life insurance was never meant to cover you for your life, it is only meant to cover an unexpected loss of life while you build up your retirement. |
