When insurance companies take blood and urine before ok-ing a life insurance policy what are they looking for?
I am taking out a $450,000 life insurance policy and wanted to know why the tests were so intrusive? I don't smoke or do drugs and I am both HIV and Hepatitis negative. Are they looking for STD's, blood diseases, what? Just curious.....Thanks.

They essentially are looking for any elevations that could be related to disease or foreign substances (drugs, alcohol tobacco etc).

These tests can reveil things like liver disorders, substance abuse problems, blood born diseases (like cancers, etc), or just plain old unhealthy lifestyle issues (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc). All of these factors can increase the risk of death at some point, so they want to make sure they aren't handing over half a mill. to a dead man walking.

The insurance company is looking for anything that may affect your longevity, how long you will live.

Some of the more common things they look for are HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, high cholesterol, sexually transmitted diseases, chronic illnesses, hepatitis, and any other blood diseases.

The presence of any of these diseases may reduce your potential lifespan, so the presence of these would result in either a higher life insurance premium, lower coverage available, or possibly being denied coverage from a life insurance company.

I hope that helps. Best of luck to you.

They are looking for all kinds of things. Cholesterol levels, drugs, diseases, etc. They are looking for anything and everything you can imagine that could make you a higher risk of dying before the policy expires.

MissV
As most have alluded to, they want to lessen the odds that you will die prior to them receiving enough money from your premiums to make a profit. In other words, your monthly premium could be $200 month (especially if it's a whole life policy and you're a male under 50). If you suddenly 'succumbed' two months after the policy is in force, then your beneficiary would get $450,000 for a cost of $400.

So if you have a blood disorder that might lessen your good health, then they want to know. They may also do a credit check to be sure that you aren't so much in debt that you'd hire a top gun to do you in so that your estate bills can be paid.

all kinds of things..

They are looking to make sure that you don't smoke or do drugs and that you're not HIV positive.

They're also looking to see what your blood and urine contain...what your cholesterol readings are, sugar readings. Basically all the readings they can to assess the risk that they're taking.

For real 'healthy' folks - cholesterol is the one that keeps them from getting the best rates. Look in the blogs on my site for tips on applying to get better blood/urine readings and while you're there you can quote ~150 companies to make sure the company you chose is competitive. Many online places only about a dozen companies so they don't always have the best rates.
