make sure the company you decide to place your policy with has an "A" rating. a good place to compare is on JD Power & Associates website. they have a rating area for home and auto on different companies. you ALWAYS want replacement cost included on the home AND your personal property. you ALWAYS want a good amount of personal liability coverage. its the cheapest part of your policy. you can get $500,000 for about $15 a year. a homeowners policy NEVER covers flood, so if you need coverage for that you will have to take out a separate flood policy. Be sure to schedule anything of value such as jewelry, guns, collectibles, etc so they are insured to value. call a local independent agent and set an appointment to go talk to them. they can answer any questions for you and do the work of looking for the best company for you. |

Is the company reputable and has it been in business for a long time? Is it large and stable? Do they answer your questions when you call on the phone? Does the paperwork make sense? Do they cover the value of the home (selling or buying price) or how much it would cost to rebuild it? How much of the contents of the house do they insure (your stuff)? Does it include flood or hurricanes (do you live in a flood or hurricane area)? Do you get a discount for fire alarms, intruder alarms, etc? |

How easy it is for you to get ahold of an agent. How many questions the agent asks - the more, the better. Which company they are going to put you with. How well they listen, how well they explain coverages, and how many extra coverages they offer.
The biggest problem people have when they buy homeowners, is they end up underinsured, because either they, or their agent, didn't want to take the time to explain everything, and offer the appropriate coverages. |

A homeowners policy of insurance protects your home, family, and your possessions against events that may occur that could cause a negative impact against the property. What the policy covers should be spelled out in writing by the insurer. The coverage should protect the homeowner against such unfortunate events as fire and smoke damage, theft, vandalism, wind, rain, hail, and bodily injuries that may occur on and or to the property.
Question: Will it cover natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides?
Answer: Most homeowner policies do not provide coverage against such events as earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, avalanches, and other natural disasters but you can purchase additional insurance to cover property against these events?
Question: Will additional coverage be offered at the time I purchase my insurance or do I have to go to another source?
Answer: Your insurance agent should discuss all coverage options before he writes your policy for homeowners coverage, but if the agent does not, then you should bring the subject up yourself.
It is always a good idea to shop around for the best rates and coverage when buying any type of insurance. |
