When should you increase insurance policies?
My husband and I have insurance policies through his work. We have no kids at this point but would like to have kids in the next few years. If I got pregnant, and heaven forbid anything were to happen to my husband, his insurance policy would cover the cost of the funeral and allow me maybe a year to stay at home, but then I'd have to work full-time to support my child. I hope to work part-time when we have kids because I it's important to me for my children to have a parent home with them. When would it be best to take out a larger insurance policy on my husband and on myself in case anything were to happen to me and the baby survives?

You answered your own question. When you have a life changing event in your life like a child, always consider the future. It is best to upgrade your insurance when you are younger, premiums are lower.

If you're both healthy, I would suggest you buy now. Sounds like you're both young, so term may be an affordable option. No good having coverage if you can't pay the premiums. You'll save money with an individual policy vs. group coverage (again assuming you're healthy, with good family history, favorable driving record, no risky hobbies, etc.). If your husband's under 45, consider a multiple of 10-15x income as a starting point. If you're a non-working spouse, consider 1/2 the amount of your husband's coverage for yourself. Good luck.

There is no better time to buy life insurance than today. You never know what may happen tomorrow.

He's insured through is job, but what happens if her loses or switches his job? Most likely is going to lose the insurance. It might not be in the near future but it can happen. The older he gets the more it will cost to insure him and you. You will also have to pass the health questions and a possible medical exam (depending on the amount/company). Most likely the company insurance is term as well, meaning it expires and you won't have anything once he retires. I would take a whole life policy out now on both of you. If you're young it won't cost much at all. I am 23 and have a policy for $50,000 and pay only $23/month. Men unfortunately pay more than that but it is not that bad.
Even if you don't want to get a policy right now, I would still look into some options so that you are covered. Also, if you have a mortgage some of the life insurance will probably cover that and you still would have to work if you had a baby and something happened to him.
But to answer your question. You should probably review your policies once a year and just see if they still fit your life style. Also, review them anytime something happens in your life like having a baby, losing a job, changing job, buying a house etc.

Well, the goal seems to be taking care of the baby. You'll probably want a PRIVATE insurance policy, so that if your hubby loses his job, you still have the insurance.

I'd wait until the baby arrives, then get the insurance privately.

YOu probably can't increase his insurance anyway through work, until open enrollment comes around.

Get a private policy for 10 times his salary. Get a 30 year term if you are inder 30 and a 20 yr term if you are over 30.

ah insurance to me is to pay for funerals and as for the baby- a amount of money needed to pay for food and a baby sitter company. unless u want to add more so that if something does happen you can purchase a house, a yact, a farrari, etc by increasing the prenuim.
