Dianna P | When to add teen to auto insurance policy? |
My 16 y/o son just received his driver's license. Do we need to add him to our policy immediately or is he covered for a certain period of time as a student driver? |

Diana,
Since he has his license he has to be added to your policy right away. You can check into discounts available if he gets good grades. You also may want to get him to take a defensive driving course as this could qualify him for an extra discount, too. Check with your company when you add him on. See what discounts they offer. :-) |

We are in the same boat. Bought our son a car a couple of months ago and he wont be 16 till November.
Right now the car is insured and I am driving it until he gets his license (It gets better gas mileage than my SUV).
Everyone I talk to says don't do anything until the insurance company finds out. Just leave it the way it is until they call you on it. I really don't think that is the wisest thing to do, but I know our insurance will skyrocket the second we have to add him to our insurance. Besides, I think they will find out sooner rather than later, an agent in my insurance co.'s office lives two houses down from us and I am sure she will see my son driving as she is a big time excersize buff and walks every night. |

Your insurance is going to be expensive because your child and 16 and a male. Rates are higher for teenage males. He should be added to your policy as soon as possible. Depending on what insurance company you have depends on whether or not he is covered for a set amount of time you should ask your carrier. |

It really depends on the state laws. In NC the driver has to have proof of insurance before they can get their license, but they do not have to to get their permit. |

He has a drivers license - he resides in your household - gotta add him now. |

Depends on the policy wording. Progressive, for instance, gives you ZERO grace period to add a new driver who's a household member. But the standard, ISO form wording says, you have 30 days to add a new driver to the policy. The kicker is, though, they get added effective the day they have their license, so it doesn't save any money to wait.
I would ABSOLUTELY add him today, if you haven't already. |

Unfortunately there is not such thing as automatic coverage for a student driver. This is the time when the insurance companies want to make sure they are rated on the policy since statistics show that young males are more likely to be in an auto accident than an older male or female.
The most expensive rate in insurance is on a 16 year old male.
If you do not want your insurance claim to be denied or be dropped by your insurance company, I would add him now.
Yes, it will be very expensive to add him, but insurance companies offer discounts for students who have had a driver training course and/or a "B" average or better. |
