Christopher B | When will I get the inheritance money? |
My grandmother passed in May of this year. She had tons of life insurance from different companies AIG, etc. She always made it a point to let us know that she was insurance poor. She really didn't say she was giving us (her grandchildren) the money, but she would always tell us we were lucky that she had so much life insurance. I haven't seen or heard anything about this. I sometimes wonder if my parents are trying to keep it a secret. Is there a certain time limit that it takes to get those kinds of things in order? I don't know who in the family is in charge of her estate...no one talks about it. Additional Details Isn't there a time that the money has to stay in...uh what is it called? |

You have to know who the policy was with and apply for it. She may have left it to someone else or quit paying on the policies or left it to a trust for when the grand kids are all older. |

life insurance policies can be distributed fairly quickly, since they aren't part of the estate. you need a copy of her death certificate and you need to call the company she had the policy with. if you are listed as a beneficiary, you send a copy of the death certificate in, fill out some paperwork, and you get a check for your portion of the money. however it's possible as a grandchild you aren't listed as a beneficiary, and therefor wont get anything unless she had money in the bank and she put you in for a percent of it in her will. which, in that case, it will most likely take another 6 months or so before you see anything from it. |

Life insurance pays directly, to whomever your grandmother told them to pay. It usually takes about three weeks from the time the claim is filed, for the checks to be written.
Odds are, the policy has paid out already.
Regarding an inheritance - which is different from life insurance - there are court and legal procedures that must be completed, even if there is a will. It can take six months, to YEARS. My grandmother passed in April, with a will and a small estate, no fighting among her children, and the paperwork STILL isn't finished. |

Why don't you ask your parents? If you are a minor, she may have left money in trust for you. Insurance is not part of her estate, unless she specifically made it part of her estate ( some people do that). Ordinarily, it passes directly to the beneficiaries, before the estate settles. If she passed away in May, her estate probably hasn't been probated, yet. It takes quite awhile to go through probate, and varies depending on what state she lived in. However, you really should speak up ( in a nice way) and ask your parents if you are going to inherit anything, since your Grandma told you that you will. |

The beneficiary can be a person's estate. Hopefully she did not do things that way. Hopefully she named someone, a person, as beneficiary.
Call AIG ASAP and tell them that she passed away and you are checking to see if she had a policy with them. They can do a name search and check and see. That will be the only way to know what is going on. After that ask them if the policy has been paid out yet.
Good Luck.

Insurance polices are not part of the estate - the money goes directly to the beneficiary assignated by your grandmother. If you haven't gotten a check from any of the insurance companies, then you were not listed as a beneficiary, and won't be getting any money. It's possible she had your parents as the beneficiaries, and in that case, they are not obligated to tell you. |
