Neesha J | When you have health insurance with a deductible, how does it work with office copays? |
I'm searching for health insurance and I'm thoroughly confused at this point. I'm pretty healthy and just need insurance for annual checkups and routine visits etc, but I'm looking to conceive later on too. The plans I'm looking at have deducts ranging from 0-7500.00. Does that mean I would have to pay everything out of pocket until I reach the deduct? How does that work with office copays? If I had a doc appt and the bill was 200.00 does that mean I pay the 200.00 every time until I reach the deduct before the plan would pay? Someone please explain in simple terms. Thanks! |

OK, the deductible means, the insurance doesn't pay ANYTHING until after you've paid out that much. So, yes, you pay the $200 for the first ten visits.
I'd STRONGLY suggest that you need to shop for your health insurance, through a local agent - so you have a reliable source to ask your questions. |

Hi, I suggest you find a plan that has in network benefits with no deductible. Especially if you plan to use the benefits a lot, then you would only pay the copay.... If you do choose a plan that has a deductible - simply put, the insurance will pay nothing on any claim submitted until after the ded is met by you. Deductible is usually computed using the insurance company's allowed amount for the service billed... Such as an in network provider charges $200 but he is contracted with the insurance company for that service of $150... Only the $150 will go toward that deductible. Hope this helps... Mzz Ann |

Depends on the plan. For most plans the copay covers only the office visit (and some services done in the office). So even prior to meeting your deductible you would pay only the copay, but labs, xrays, hospitalizations, surgery, etc.., etc... would all be subject to the deductible.
Other plans require you to meet the deductible first before the copays kick in.

Deductibles are usually stated on an annual basis. That is the amount that you have to pay before the insurance "kicks in." The copay is what you would pay out of pocket (per visit) after the insurance "kicks in." |

I'll agree with the pickle. With most individual plans the co-pay is not subject to the deductible but you need to check the plans to see what is included with the co-pay. Many plans will have the visit covered but not any lab work or X-rays. You'll either need to check with the benefits of each plan or you can visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget in a few minutes where it would take you hours if not days. There is no extra charge using an agent.
Be aware that maternity is more of a pre-payment plan and that not all policies include maternity. No insurance company is going to pay out more for the delivery than it receives in premium. If you do the math you'll find that the extra premium for maternity just about equals delivery and pre-natal charges after the waiting period. With most plans complications of pregnancy, such as a C-section, are covered even if you don't have maternity. |
