Well, as you've probably found out, very, very few insurance carriers will write someone who's 80. The elderly population, in general, actually has more accidents per mile driven than newly licensed teens. From my personal experience, many don't usually stop driving until they have a major accident.
To answer your question - depending on where you live, your state may have an "assigned risk" pool, where the agent submits the high risk application to the "pool" and it's "assigned" to a carrier by the state. That's likely the only place you'll be able to get insurance - not even Progressive will write a new policy for a driver that age. Also, the driver will likely have to have a medical & vision exam within 30 days of the policy being issued, and have a medical statement filled out by their doctor.
The BEST thing for the over 70 crowd, is to keep their auto policy with the same carrier. Most companies won't cancel you until you have a couple accidents, even if you're over 70. |

I would recommend the Broker Portal's quotation request service for Overs 80's Car Insurance.
They will arrange for a specialist UK insurance broker to make contact and discuss your requirements. This service will save you time as well as money.
Alternatively, you can do all of the work yourself, and refer to The Broker Portal's list of top 5 recommended insurance brokers/companies. |

You could try Saga but over 80 year olds are statistically as risky as young drivers. If someone like Saga cannot help then try a local insurance broker. |

Most non-standard companies will write 80 year olds, to reach one call your local independent agents in you area. The only requirement they usually ask for is a doctor's questionaire be filled out. Bristol West, Omni, The Hartford, Dairyland do not ask for this to be done in my state.
Each state has different rules that they have to go by. Insurance companies can decide who they write and who they won't. Someone with too many tickets, someone over 78, someone who has too many cars..there's all kind of rules and regulations. AARP would be your best option if they have had 6 months of coverage. But if for some reason they have no coverage right now, call the independents (the ads should say independent or it not, they would have names you don't hear on tv all the time.)
Call around and get prices quotes. It's a little work, but it's well worth it, the prices are going to be high, because of the ages, where I am at you are looking at least $80 a month for the first 6 months...maybe a little less with a homeowner's discount, but not much. Good luck on the search...
God bless us all........... |

I would start by contacting your auto agent. |

I am horrified that you cannot get any car insurance. This must be addressed before I get to your age. The insurance companies should appreciate all the years of driving experience you have to offer and of course myself when I get to your age. Well in another 13 years. |

You might try getting a quote online. They do not have an upper age limit. Go to: http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=613177&Type=auto |

Hopefully nowhere. Most 80 year-olds shouldn't be driving. |

I was about to suggest SAGA, but some has already pointed you in that direction. However, I should like to make a couple of points addressed to those smug younger people who have made rather uninformed comments about age and driving.
It might surprise them to know that we all age at different rates, in terms of reaction times, visual acuity, night vision, etc.. In the same way that some elderly drivers are no longer as competent as they were when young, there are some young people who have no natural talent for driving and have many attempts before they pass a very simple manouevring test, in town, at a maximum speed of 30 MPH. Are such people safe on modern roads simply because they are 18+?
To give you one very good example of why age is not always an indicator of ability to control machinery, a few years ago a Royal Air Force pilot was still instructing on Harrier fast jets at the age of 62 - and he was still a very sharp pilot when he retired.
It would be preferable if we _all_ had to take a driving assessment test, say, every five years. That way, only the proficient would continue driving and the hopeless ones - irrespective of age - would be off the road. Hence the insurance issue would not arise.
I have several friends who might be considered 'elderly and past it' by some of the younger answerers, but they know their limits, and use the experience gained over many years to drive safely. I never feel worried when I'm out with them. So don't judge every older driver by the 'aunt on the Mway' example. It that were true of all older motorists, the highways would be littered with crashed vehicle -and yet they are not. I drive many miles per year and rarely see an accident - so it's not as if UK drivers, young or old, are that bad. We still have the best road safety record in Europe (which means it is infinitely better than in that land of automobiles, the USA - where I've driven often, with the proverbial bated breath). We are matched only by Sweden. And if you have ever driven in Sweden it is obvious why the accident rate is low - relatively few cars and almost deserted roads!
So, all you superb drivers yet to reach your 25th birthdays, remember that you, too, will be 'elderly' one day. |
