Eve D | Where can I get health insurance for just one month (August)? |
I am looking for health insurance (on behalf of someone else) for just the month of August. He is insured through his mother through July, and begins work in September. He is planning to contact his employer and see whether it is possible to get on their plan a month early. If not, does anyone have specific suggestions?
He is US citizen in good health. Additional Details He'll be in New York (City), which seems to be one of very few states not covered by a lot of these short-term plans google is sending my way. |

Check with Time/Assurant or UnitedHealthcare's GoldenRule for short-term health insurance. You can even purchase a policy online, just search for "short-term medical insurance". Those carriers sell insurance with terms from 1 day to 6 months. He should expect to pay between $40-$80 for a decent one month long policy. Tell him to keep in mind, though, that most employers' health plans do not cover you on your first day, but typically 30-90 days after your start date, so have him purchase a plan that covers him to that point, not to when he starts. |

If he has a pre-existing condition, he should NOT accept a short-term policy -- doing so will negate his "creditable coverage" that he earned under his mother's policy.
Under the terms of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a person is permitted a break of NO MORE than 63 days between group coverages; if a person accepts a short-term policy or if more than 63 days elapse, then he or she cannot have previous coverage credited against the pre-existing condition exclusionary period. Please note, a waiting period imposed by an employer does NOT count toward the 63-day period. So if he becomes employed 30 days after his current coverage terminates, but has to wait 60 days to enroll, he only has a 30-day break and he's fine.
Short-term policies aren't worth the money anyway, so I suggest he wait it out.

Hi Eve,
If he just graduated from college, the best thing is to check with the student health office at his school whether there're some external insurance companies connected to the school, and offer short-term plans for recent graduates.
Although a short-term plan usually starts with a 6 month-coverage (and up), one can usually call and cancel it after a month or so, if needed.
However, one thing to be prudent is that usually these short-term plans do not that much, so it's better to check the terms carefully before picking up a plan.
Yes, Golden Rules under eHealthInsurance is a good option, you may check it out at:
https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/Alliance?allid=Gol23570
It's not so difficult to use this site. Simply click the "Short Term" bar on the left, and then follow the steps to get a quote. A plan ranging 80-90 bucks should be sufficient for short-term. Again, please call and make sure the pre-conditionings and the maximum deductible rates meet his company's standards...
With all the good wishes, |

OK, he's NOT going to be able to get on the employer's group plan before he starts working. It's not up to the employer, that's the way a group policy works.
He/you need to contact a local, independent agent - like the guy that does his car insurance, or his mother's house insurance - to ask for a short term medical quote. Shopping on the internet is NOT going to wrok - as you noticed - as each state is different. |
