Where do insurance companies get driving records from?
I was recently involved in an accident with a cab. The accident was the cab's fault. The cops gave him a ticket. The cab company is self insured and has agreed to pay for the damages. My insurance company is Gieco. Will Gieco every find out about this accident? If so, will it be clear that I was not at fault?

They will get a copy of the accident report eventually.

In the report, it will be clear that the accident was not your fault and you will not be penalized.

Insurers get accident reports and other driving records through a third party that gets the information from your state.

The largest provider is an Atlanta company called ChoicePoint.

ChoicePoint buys the bulk data from each state (usually on a daily basis) and then amasses it and resells it to insurers who run it against their databases and get hits for their policyholders.

It all happens behind the scenes and you the policyholder almost never knows about it.....until now.

Your record is obtained from a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) and a Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) report. GEICO and other insurance companies pull these reports when you purchase an
auto policy or shortly before your policy renews (could be at every renewal or less depending on your policy type) and can see all the info that is listed. It will clearly state whose fault the accident is. Please call and let them know. This will protect you.

yes Geico will find out about the accident next time they run your MVR and pay attention to this, the MVR will only show name, date, location and type of incident, It will not indicate who was at fault, save yourself alot of legwork and report it to your company now, otherwise when it comes up you will have to take off work and stand in line to get a copy of the police report for your insurance company so you can prove that you were not at fault
on your MVR you are assumed guilty until proven innocent

Yes, Geico will find out about the accident - but as long as they don't pay anything out on it, it will look like a not-at-fault accident on your record.

Keep in mind, having a lot of not-at-fault claims on your policy can count against you - the insurance companies will say, what is it about this guy that people keep crashing into him?

The motor vehicle department in the state the driver is to be insured in.
