swirl1008 | Where is a safe place to keep important papers like life insurance policies, your will etc.? |
I read that you shouldn't keep these in a safe deposit box but the article didn't say why. |

Request your bank for safety deposit box. Some banks will give you one for free, while others want a small fee.
But have a photocopy of all those documents somewhere in your house or place of work (as long as it is secured).
Then tell someone you trust -- e.g. your lawyer, spouse or child -- where you keep them and the keys to these safety boxes. You don't want a situation when you die and those you left behind will be scrambling all over your place looking for those documents |

Scan all your important paper documents and keep the resultant images on a USB flash drive somewhere safe, like your lockable desk drawer at work or at a relatives house.
Encrypt the data if you want.
Now you are protected against theft, fire, losing your safe key, etc for the documents. |

I think you got some bad advice on the safe deposit box. I say that's a good place. You might want to use a faraway bank if you're afraid the bank might be affected by the same disaster as you. |

You do not want your Will (Last Will and Testament) in a safe deposit box. When you die, the bank seals the safe deposit box and the bank then requires an expensive court order to open it.
A home safe or fire box is a good choice.
Ask your attorney for other choices.
By all means tell someone (spouse, children, executor) where to find these documents. |

We have a fireproof box that we keep important documents in--social security cards, birth certificates, jewelry insurance, wills, etc. It's small and portable and in the back of our closet. It's a worthy investment! |

Yes, you shouldn't keep those paper in a safe deposit box because the more safety place in in your home. Just keep it in the firefox box, lock it. That for practical reason, no need to go far from home if you need that kind of paper .... just remember the pin lock. |

Bank safe deposit box.
This way...if your house burns down in a fire the documents are safe. Just make sure someone in your family knows about it.
You are not going to get a place much safer than a bank. A bank has much better security than most private homes.
The only down side - is the limited hours that you have access to the safe deposit box. You have to go during bank hours.
Along with insurance policies - it's also a good idea to keep car titles, land deeds, heirloom jewelry and other papers in it.
I handled a claim where someone had a 700 lb fireproof safe stolen from their home while they were gone. The safe was later found with the bottom of it cut out. You would think 700lbs would be a bit heavy to steal...but the thief...stole the property owner's vehicle - hooked a chain to the safe and the truck and pulled the safe right out of the house. The damage to the home supported that. When the safe was recovered - all the contents were missing.
****just my personal opinion. use at your own risk. ****** |

Ah, well, that's because if you DIE, how is whoever going to be able to get at your will and life insurance policy? FIRST your estate has to go through probate court, THEN an executor is assigned, THEN that executor - not the one you named - gets to get access to the safe deposit box and will.
The process to GET to those papers is extremely difficult, and expensive. That's why you shouldn't keep them there.
We actually have a file in our home, called "If MB and (DH) are both dead, look here". And I've told my parents and two siblings about the file. It lists life insurance policies, bank accounts, retirement accounts, holds our wills, and guardianship wishes for our kids. There's a copy at DH's office, if we die in a fire. |

Best place to keep papers is your home/trusted home safe as the papers will be handy when required and it will be known to more than to the owner.Rest of the things are written on the papers. |
