You have several Children's plans offered by Life Insurance Companies. For example, ICICI-Prudential offers a plan called Smart Kid which offers investments for the child. The plan offers life cover for the parent who takes the policy. You have the option of choosing the type of investment you want to make with your premium. The money will be paid to the child at maturity, which may be fixed at18 years to 25 years. Partial withdrawals are also allowed. This policy can be taken by a parent who is 20 to 60 years of age for a child from birth to 15 years of age. |

I think you should have a life insurance on yourself and a savings plan for your baby.
In your life insurance policy, request to have these additional benefits/riders:
1. The 'payor waiver' benefit (waiving all future premiums in the event of disablement)
2. The 'child guarantee insurability' benefit (for your child to purchase a life insurance policy when he grows up without medical assessment)
3. The 'claim escalation' benefit (the payout is index according to CPI so that it does not lose to inflation)

Get an AXA College Plus or simply Honey variable product with payor's clause (a provision that pays for the remaining premiums for you're child's college fund should anything happen to you, the payor) and add an accident rider to it if it's not yet part of the package. Infants are prone to accidents until they are seven years old...statistically speaking. Insuring your children when they are young should give you less headache. Insurance costs increase as they grow older. Plus the insurance business is highly regulated compared to pre-need industries. |

For young babies, the plans from LIC of india are far better than private insurers.
Some plans like Komal Jeevan are available off the shelf.
