What type of insurance are your buying -- life, auto, homeowners, or health? (There are more kinds but these are the types most people buy.)
I will assume auto. (If not, please put additional information in your question.) Most people just shop for price here, which will vary based mostly on what state you live in, and whether you live in a city or a more rural area. You can buy from on-line insurers, and many people are happy with this, but I would be concerned about where you were to take your car if you were in an accident, or needed help. Your best bet is to look for an independent agent in your area. An independent agent sells policies from many different companies, and can also explain the different pieces of the coverage to you (e.g., choices on deductible and what that means, choices on limits of liability). Because your agent represents many different companies, he or she may also be able to quote different rates to you for the same coverage, depending on where you live.
My answer doesn't really address picking the best company -- "best" depends on what's most important to you personally. All insurance companies are regulated by the NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) such that, even if the company goes out of business, the policyholders are protected. So I wouldn't worry too much about handing your money over only to find you have no coverage the next day! I would focus more on service reputation. National companies like State Farm and Allstate have excellent service reputations in the industry. I don't hear such good things about some of the on-line companies, but have no first-hand experience there.

I think Nationwide for auto. I work for Nationwide and everytime I do a quote, I almost always beat the other competitors (State Farm, Liberty Mutual, Progressive....) I think that progressive is usually very high since it is made for high Risk. Allstate is the only one that sometimes comes close to beating us. They also have that accident forgivness program which sounds like it could be good. Nationwide however has multi car and multi policy discounts, and a no accident discount....etc...hope this helps some! |
