Blueboofrog | Who needs insurance? |
Auto insurance is a hit or miss conception with police enforcement doing the insurance company's work for them. Too many drivers have no insurance leaving responsible drivers to pick up their tab. Why don't we tack on 10 or twenty cents per gallon at the gasoline pump to go for insurance. If you don't buy gas for your car, you're not going to be able to drive. That way, if you drive, you automatically have insurance. This frees up police to do real cop work, cuts down on the cost and makes sure everyone who drives has insurance. Whadya think? |

In my state, New York, you HAVE to have insurance or you can't drive it. The minimum you can have is Liability but you can't drive or register a car without insurance and you always have to have proof of it. |

But what about 18 wheelers. Should they pay an extra 30 dollars simply because some people won't pay insurance?
You have a good point though :) |

Why don't we tack on 10 or twenty cents per gallon at the gasoline pump to go for insurance?
This WOULD make sure people who drive have insurance. And in general, people who drive more, use more gas, and would pay more for insurance.
But should a brand new 16 year old driver with no driving experience who drives in a big city and who fills up once a week, pay the same for insurance as a 30 year old who drives in the suburbs and who has no driving accidents in 14 years who also fills up once a week?
Or should an 18 year old woman pay the same as an 18 year old man, if their driving habits and skills are different?
I think "fairness" suggests we charge different insurance rates. |

"Paying" for auto insurance through higher gas 'taxes' is not an equitable solution. In fact it may make the problem worse since everyone would pay the same 'insurance rates' regardless of his/er driving record and driving ability. Insurance companies do us a service by charging higher rates to bad drivers. It forces them to improve their driving, get off the road or drive illegally.
If bad drivers 'paid' for their insurance the same as good drivers, what incentives to drivers have for driving safely and being responsible for the way they drive? "OOPS, I bumped into that car in the parking lot and dented the door. I won't worry, they have insurance through their gas taxes. That will pay for the repair."
What we need is more enforcement of the auto insurance laws and driving laws in particular as well as requiring the insurance companies to report customers who drop their auto insurance. These places that offer low cost 30 day insurance policies should be banned. |

Interesting concept..........however that would eliminate well over a million jobs (mine included) for insurance agents. |

Obviously you have never taken an economics course in your life. That would never work. For one, insurance has nothing to do with the oil companies, refinaries, etc. That 10 to 20 cents per gallon you think is so reasonable, hello have you been to the gas pump lately. That money would in no way make a dent in the number of auto accidents reported per year. Let alone, the fact that some people would be paying a disporportionate amount of this "insurance" than others. |

It would be cheaper that way and no way to regulate funds for current insurance providers...nice idea, but just not going to happen. What if you wanna up your coverage...28 cents? |

Idea is good.. but need to increase the premium..per gallon.
It is somewhat effective for bigger and costlier vehicles as bigger the vehicle the miles per gallon will be less, so have to fill more!! |
