The difference isn't just the limits. If it is discovered that a vehicle on the personal auto policy is being used for commercial purposes, your carrier can deny coverage on a claim. If you are sued in connection with an auto claim, you will want coverage to extend to your business. It can only take 1 lawsuit to put a company out of business. Make sure you're protected.
As far as carriers, you will want to go to an independent insurance agency so that they can do the "shopping" for you. Ask some of your fellow contractors who they use or look in the phonebook.
Who is writing your contractor's general liability coverage? they should be able to write your autos as well. If you are not carrying general liability, I'd recommend you RUN to an agents office and get coverage in place. (especially in this super-litigious state of ours)
Update:
Please do not make a decision between personal insurance and commercial insurance strictly based on the fact that personal insurance is less expensive. It is probably less but it is NOT the appropriate coverage and if there were a claim, I think you would be sorry that you hadn't paid a little more for what you truly need. Also, you really should have the non-owned & hired auto liability. |

~~Commercial insurance is higher, because any age is insured, and of course it's high mileage, etc.
We have always carried our commercial with State Farm. We are very happy, all claims have been paid quickly (had a customer whose brick mailbox was broken by our truck), no problem, it was quickly paid.
They also offer six month premium payments which can be split in half. Their prices are very competitive.~~ |

State Farm does some types of commercial vehicles. It depends what kind it is and some other factors like weight, what kind of truck it is, like dump or box or ? I am in CA and work in a State Farm office. So, I am biased. But you can get a quote and shop around with some brokers too to get the best price. I think Farmers may write it too.

In California there is only one company I would go with for commercial insurance. They are a major oil-field asset insurer. They can write a policy for you (probably cheaper and better).
My dad used them, he has a lawn service. We have an umbrella policy.
I work in his office and pay the bills so I know how much he pays.

No, it's the usage as well.
But you're NOT looking for contractors insurance, if you only need the commercial auto. YOu're only looking for commercial auto, and for stand alone policies, you're PROBABLY going to end up with Progressive. MOST companies won't write stand alone commercial auto policies - meaning, without writing the general liability as well.
If you're trying to decide if you want personal insurance or commercial insurance, you should talk to an agent, but generally, if you only have one or two trucks, the following is true:
1. The trucks must be owned by the business, not an individual, to qualify for a commercial auto policy, if you're using a SERVICE class code
2. Personal auto policies are cheaper than a commercial auto policy for fewer than five vehicles, using service class. Commercial and retail classes are even higher.
3. If you have a truck with a lift or a dump, it automatically has to go on a commercial policy, rated for commercial or retail use, NOT service, and not on a personal auto policy
4. Driving records on small commercial auto policies are strictly underwritten - if you have drivers under 25, regardless of their driving records, expect to pay at least 40% more for the insurance.
5. Limits are actually the same. You have the exact same options on a commercial vs personal policy, with the exception of being able to get hired and nonowned auto coverage on the commercial auto policy. |
