Who pays for the people who get health care without insurance?
If hospitals are required by law to treat anybody who walks into an emergency room, who picks up the cost if that person does not have insurance?

Hospitals do offer charity care, which are sometimes based on the fact that the hospital has gotten low-interest loans for construction and by doing so, they are obligated to write-off a certain amount to members of the community that qualify for free health care.

Some hospitals also receive money from the state if they are "trauma centers" for those uninsured patients that meet the trauma criteria. This is funded through cigarette sales in CA and paid by the state.

Another way is that the uninsured apply for medicaid, and in that case, the State pays for the care, which is actually funded through state taxes paid by the people of that state.

A smaller fraction go to collection and do eventually get paid in payments by patients, but in many cases, there is no reimbursement to the hospital and it is written off as a bad debt, which is claimed at the end of the year on their corporate taxes.

the person being treated if over 18 has to pay for it if under than the parents have to pay. no one gets seen for free when they don't have insurance

They are only required to treat for a LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY.

But, the cost ultimately, is on the taxpayer. Just like every OTHER "free" service in the USA is on the taxpayer.

The taxpayer pays. Or, the hospital eats the cost and takes a loss.
That is why many hospitals and emergency rooms have closed. They can not afford to keep taking those losses.

If the patient cannot pay the bill, the hospital will either set up a payment plan or erase the bill. You just have to talk to them about it and set up an application. Be careful though, some hospitals bill through the clinics that are associated with them and then the bill is all yours.

I have news for you they do not treat everyone who walks in and they can attatch your wages, take your home, car and anything else of value and this account is not cancelled it stays with you forever.
My brother had insurance and was bleeding out of his bowels. They took him into the emergency room and found the problem. An ulcerated colon thing. Did they do surgury, since his insurance didn't cover all of the expenses? No, they refused until he got a large portion which relatives paid and he later got a loan. But he was unable to pay all the bill. They put a lien on his house, threatened to take his car and attatched his wages, his family was forced to live on 75. a week until it was paid off. They took almost his whole check.
So what they do to people without insurance, they refuse to treat them.
It was in the paper they had a man die in the hospital waiting room he was bleeding and no doctor would sew him up. He didn't have insurance.

Obviously, the patient is responsible for his own bill. However, the reality is that if someone doesn't have insurance, that person will unlikely pay the bill. That bill gets stuck to everyone else who goes to the hospital and is able to pay. That makes everyone else's cost go up. The hospital may be able to write off the loss, but the doctors are not able to do so. The doctors really get the short end of the stick when a 'freebie' comes to the hospital. They are the ones who have to care face to face with the patient and get nothing in return. Make no mistake, if you have no insurance you are a huge burden to everyone else. Your providers have to provide equal care for no pay, that is not fair to anyone. Medicaid is simply welfare and the reimbursement for that is paltry. Get a job with insurance and stay healthy- you'll be much happier for it.

Hi there, I suggest you ask some health care specialists about this. Here is a source: http://www.myhealth-forum.com/

Not all hospitals are required to treat, but most will. The costs are billed to the patient but if they can't pay, the hospital writes off the costs. That's a fancy way to say that we all pay for the uninsured - which makes it a moral and economic imperative for all of us to have insurance! That way we're really spreading the risk among all of us!
