Who will cover lap-band surgery?
Just wanted to know if anyone knows of any insurance companies that will cover lap-band surgery.

I agree with Zarnev, if you are looking for an new individual insurance plan to cover lap-band surgery I doubt you will find one that will take you if you need the surgery. It's a catch 22.

However, if you are trying to choose between different plans that you qualify for (say from a new job), it depends on the group insurance contact. My insurance has a specific exclusion to weight-loss surgeries all together. My parents have the same insurance provider and theirs doesn’t. The only difference was the companies we worked for. My dad's company willing to include weight-loss in his policy, mine wasn't

At http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/members/insurers.php they list common experiences among different insurance companies in each state. You may be able to find an insurance company in your area that will cover it. They are pretty accurate I found. The list included items like what are the requirements (BMI, DR care etc) and how individuals get it approved.

If you really want to have it done, find a doctor and have a consultation. Most places will do the initial one free. Your doctor's staff will more than likely know if an insurance plan will even consider coverage. They may also have financing available. I paid 100% cash up front (I cashed out my 401K, I figured I would be dead by retirement anyway if I didn't do something), but my doctor did offer financing.

If you are looking for an individual plan that you could get to cover the surgery I'm sorry to say you are out of luck. There are several companies that will cover the surgery but they all have height and weight guidelines. If you are a candidate for surgery, which in most cases is a BMI greater than 40, you will be out of the guidelines for all individual plans. Your only option would be to get a group policy through an employer. They will accept you into a group plan and will cover the surgery IF that policy includes the procedure although there may be a waiting period.

They may see this as cosmetic if you are in the normal weight range. However if you are over weight and it is affecting your health that may be different

Sandy S
Some will many will not. My niece just when through hades to get her company to approve the surgery, it took 3 1/2 months of constant nagging from her for them to address her concern.

Who does is not really important, does YOUR insurance company? Call and find out.

Katie
A lot of them do if it can be proven that it's medically necessary. Usually you need to have a certain BMI.

Your best bet, depending on what state you are in, is to get on a group policy through your employer.

If you're overweight enough to need it, most insurance companies won't want to give you a health insurance policy, because, well, they'll figure you're trying to get them to pay for the lap band.

If it helps, it's NOT effective in the long run, and has serious side effects, and can even result in death. It's NOT a good plan for weight loss, if that's your goal.
