Who will offer cobra?
My fiance just lost his job last week. I was wondering who is going to be offering cobra? Is it the actual insurance company or will it be his previous employer? How long does it usually take to get set up? I have pneumonia and I am going to need health insurance. We are both on daily meds and cannot go without health coverage! Thanks for all your help.

He should contact the HR department of his former job. They will tell him if he qualifies for COBRA (cobra refers to the law that requires companies to give employees the opportunity to continue their coverage). They will also tell him how much it will cost. He has to elect it within 90 days of leaving, and pay the full premium, plus up to 2% administrative fee. So, you might find it shockingly expensive. If he chooses to continue it, it will be the same coverage you/he had before, although you might get a new identification card to use for doctor visits.

In the meantime, you might want to look at this website to see if you could qualify for other benefits.

Good luck.

The employer will report the termination to the carrier. They have 30 days to do this. Then the carrier has 14 days to get the COBRA info to your fiance. He will then have 60 days to elect or refuse the COBRA. If he elects the COBRA, he will have to pay the entire premium (the employer will no longer be contributing what they were when he was their employee) plus up to a 2% adminstrative fee. He will have to back pay the premiums for the months that have passed since his termination, regardless of whether or not he received health care in those months. There will be no break in coverage.

If you are on his plan now, he can cover both of you on COBRA. However, if you are not currently being covered, you cannot be added to the COBRA once you are married.

The insurance company will contact your fiance about the COBRA, if he qualifies.

Google "COBRA qualifications" for more info.

It's offered by the employer, and it goes through the same insurance company that writes the group plan.

It takes about three weeks to set up from the time he accepts it, but it goes back retroactive to the day coverage was lost. And you have to PAY retroactive to that date, too.

It's not common, that your fiance would be able to cover YOU, under 'cobra'.

His employer is responsible for the notification. You should just be able to use your cards 'til it gets set up. Just make sure you're on top of it because if the time frames come and go or if you're late on the payment they don't give you a second chance.
